Sponge
« on: July 20, 2012, 10:32:25 PM »
Saw sponge mix at Sainsburys.
Thought "yum a cake mix!"
Made the mix. Was sorely disappointed.
Thought sponge tasted like a sponge.
Anyone else agree?

Sponge cake is nice in it's own right if made correctly but it's a bit dry for some. Which means slathering in strawberries and cream might be in order. ;D

You're right. I totally wanted American-style cake. And anything tastes good slathered in cream and strawberries.  ;D
I Have only found cupcake mixes in the local supermarkets and they are pretty expensive. It's painful to pay 3 pounds for a $1 cake mix.
Guess I gotta do what I gotta do.

It's not very difficult to make a proper cake without a mix.

I really dislike baking. I love to cook, but baking is too structured for me and you really have to follow a recipe, so cake mixes have always been a God send to me. Now though, my chicklet has been craving Red Velvet cake. They have a cupcake mix in the shops but we tried it and it wasn't so good. So, this week, we're off to Morrisons for all the ingredients to make them from scratch. I think there may be some swearing involved....did I mention...I REALLY dislike baking????:P

Haha, I'm totally the opposite.  I can't cook to save my life and I love baking as it is so structured with exact recipes followed to the letter.  Maybe it's the scientist in me, but I love a good SOP.  :D

I like both cooking and baking, but I agree that there's something really reassuring about baking! If you can read and follow directions, you can't fail!  :)

I love both cooking and baking.  Like chary said, it's really not hard to make a proper cake and usually you don't need more than a few ingredients.  I follow recipes, but because I don't eat eggs, I am always experimenting and replacing things, and stuff still manages to come out nice.

Cooking for my right brain, experimental, arts, crazy, hippie side
Baking for my left brain, engineering nerd side

I enjoy both!  ;D
