An American Guide to Britishness
« on: July 23, 2012, 04:13:52 PM »
A fellow American living in Scotland, Alana Muir, whose blog I follow has recently published her first E-Book entitled "An American Guide to Britishness." In the lead-up to the Olympics she is offering it free here (UK) and here (US)

I've only read the "Click to look inside" bits so far but I did enjoy what I saw so I thought I would pass it along to those of you here who may be interested.

Is there anyway to get it free if you don't have a kindle?

I don't have a kindle, but I downloaded the kindle-for-PC application and that seems to be working. I think you can download similar apps on android or iphones.

For those on Android, I just downloaded it too.  It doesn't come up in the Play Store, where I had hoped I could try it on my already existing reader, so I downloaded the Kindle app from there instead for free.  I initially tried to download the book through Kindle itself, hoping to skip a step.  It did come up on Kindle, but said it wasn't available in my country (which is interesting since it was published here in the UK, I assume). I then clicked the link to go to the full amazon.co.uk website direct and did a search there, where I downloaded it with no trouble to the Kindle app.

Just thought I'd give some of the steps since I hadn't used the Kindle app before and thought I'd explain in case there was anyone else in the same boat.

I've read more than 1/2 of this book since yesterday. It is great!  Really funny. My DH and I have had conversations about 90% of the terms in this book over the past 5 years.  This book should be given out to all new visa holders as part of a "welcome to the UK" packet. I wish I had read it a couple years ago! :D

This book is fantastic! I could not stop laughing when I got to badgers being the size and shape of a standard pillow! It doesn't look like the book is free anymore but I am going to buy it :) Funny and comforting!

I just downloaded it to my iPad.  I had to pay for it, but it was only $3.99.  Can't wait to begin reading it.  Looks hilarious

Wow. Just read the preview, and, um, it feels xenophobic... ???

I read it and didn't feel it was overly xenophobic. It was amusing in places but I'm glad I was able to get it for free.  ;D

Each to their own, then. :D (and for free, I'd have read it too!)

Poor girl should have done some more research before publishing though. Her stuff about warm beer and what Brits call Chinese (they're called Oriental, which to us sounds offensive, as that's what at least I was taught!), was off. And I've never heard of converse chuck taylors being called "baseball boots" before. They're trainers.
