God Save the Queen
« on: August 03, 2012, 06:29:38 AM »
Just wondering what happens to the national anthem once Prince Charles becomes king. Does the song just change to "God Save the King." Probably a silly question but am just curious  ;D. Thanks!
Love,

I think it actually started off as 'God Save the King' and was then adapted for female monarchs.

According to Wiki, the first time it was sung was in 1745 in support of King George II (but the phrase 'God Save the King' has been around since the 1500s)

'Rebellious Scots to crush'? I've never read the whole thing 'till then...

Yeah, it's not just the fact that it's a boring dirge that makes Scots dislike it ;)

I remember singing 'the King' and when it was changed to 'the Queen'. It was strange for awhile.

Anyone else sing the American lyrics in their head when the song comes on?  I don't do it out loud for respect to my english friends and family but I am teaching my kids the American lyrics as a form of subtle rebellion.

"My country 'tis of thee ..."

Actually, I do the other way around -- mentally sing "God save the Queen" while someone's singing the above.   ;)

Oh, and don't propose a toast while "God save the Queen" is being played.

To be fair some may hear/think of To Anacreon in Heaven when ours is played.
