Tesco to display hundreds of american brand foods!

British shoppers are set to get a taste of the USA as Tesco follows Asda's lead in launching dedicated space for imported American products in its stores.

A report by trade magazine The Grocer revealed that Tesco, the UK's biggest supermarket chain, is to install fixtures especially for brands such as Hershey's chocolate and Jack Link's meat snacks along side pretzels and squeezy cheese as customers' taste buds tingle for their favourite American treats.

The news comes a fortnight after Asda unveiled its own dedicated shelf space for snacks from the USA in 100 of its UK stores.

Tesco, Asda and Ocado are looking to capitalise on the British taste for American snacks by launching dedicated shop fixtures to stock fans' favourite treats
Asda, owned by US giant Walmart, is taking full advantage of its Stateside links by stocking a wide range of imports.

Last year it rolled out a range of 12 Hershey’s products and started stocking fizzy drink RC Cola, and introduced more Hershey's products along side the brand Reese's after being inundated with customers demands on Facebook and Twitter.

Chris Silcock, Asda category director of impulse, said that sales of chewy candy brand Tootsie Rolls were four times higher than the average for a confectionery line.

Hershey’s and Reece’s sales were up 25per cent since the confectionery bays launched.

Euro Foods Brands, which distributes Jack Link’s products, told The Grocer that the opening of specialist American confectionery shops in the UK had helped fuel a growing appetite for US brands.

British shoppers could be putting the likes of Cherry Ripe bars, Hershey's Kiss bars, Nestle Big Turks, Baby Ruth bars or Oreo cookies, pictured, in their supermarket baskets .

Brand manager Shane Angus said: 'People enjoy something international and appreciate the things Americans appreciate.'

Sales of Euro Foods’ Hershey’s products rocketed 50 per cent last year and the company is hoping for another 20per cent uplift by the end of 2012, he said.

The magazine also reported that online delivery service Ocado expanded its American range in June, growing 200 per cent year-on-year, with the roll-out of 12 lines of Jell-O with the help of suppliers Innovative Bites.

The suppliers are said to sell more than £1 million of US products to Amazon UK, showing that British customers are eager to get their hands on their favourites from across the pond.

Tesco will begin the roll out of the American fixtures in its Sandhurst, Amersham and Richmond stores.

A Tesco spokesperson said: 'Our customers are always keen to try new and exciting products from around the world, not just the U.S., and we are always keen to offer ranges that best reflect the local area around our stores.

'We are trialing offering our customers a wider range of American products this week, such as cereals, confectionery and snacks in a handful of selected stores, and look forward to their feedback.'

I bought a box of Froot Loops in Tesco last week. Half price at £1.34. Thought it was awesome as a box of Lucky Charms, Apple Jacks etc is £7+ in a lot of the American style sweet shops.
However, I think they were altered to fit UK cereal standards as they contained no artificial colours/flavours. They weren't vivid colours as they are in the US! :)

As I just posted in the beer thread. We went at the weekend and they had Sam Adams, Brooklyn lager, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Torpedo IPA, Blue Moon, Goose Island IP from about £1.80 to £2.30 a bottle.
And DW was particularly excited that in the bakery section they had big Philly-style soft pretzels for 70p

Did she get one?? If so, how was it? I saw one last week in our tesco but it was late in the day and it was sat there on it's own-- didn't look to tempting, I had a feeling I would be bitterly disappointed.

I'd be happy if they had stuff I really wanted, like mild green chillis, or Rotel and other stuff I currently can't think of, but I am guessing it will be the things I can find semi-decent replacements for here.

Still for the odd longing it should be good!

I have noticed the Tesco in my area has really upped and changed some of it's product line! (Especially in the candy and chips!) I was wondering what was going on! I may need to visit the ASDA in my area as well and see what they've added! (I didn't notice anything at the Sainsburys when I was there the other day!) I LOVE Blue moon and Sam Adams!

Pretty excited about all this!  ;D

It's fun that more American stuff is popping up, but on the whole I find it to be stuff that I never liked in the US either--really full of sugars and fat, which can be nice sometimes, but it's generally really artificial crap.  I'm not one of those health-nazi types, but I do enjoy some higher quality and marshmallow fluff or the peanut butter jars with stripes of really bad jam with very little fruit in them just doesn't make me long for home.  I hate having people think that is how we Americans eat too.

I am happy I can get goldfish now because my daughter loves them, but outside of that and the bag of oreos I'll get once or twice a year, I haven't seen any of the American food stores sell much I would have a remote interest in buying.

(I will admit to the exception being a couple of smaller local shops where I will periodically buy a Baby Ruth, A&W, or a tin of pumpkin as a treat)

Cadenza, I wouldn't say Fluff makes me "long for home" but rather lets me re-live my childhood.  I had fluffernutter sandwiches in my school lunch box quite often in primary school (as did most of my classmates).

I could really go for some wheat thins though, be nice if Tesco or Asda or Sainsbury's start carrying them.

Exactly.  I wouldn't mind if they started carrying canned pumpkin, or Peanut Butter and Co. all natural peanut butter (again! after they pulled it) or decent dill pickles but you know it is going to be that Goober Grape cr@p.

This does not involve marshmallow fluff, but then I might get through a jar a year.   ;)

We got 2, it was on Sat morning and didn't eat them until the evening with beer and they were very good.
