Damned rail fare increases AGAIN!!!!
« on: August 14, 2012, 12:21:37 PM »
My Mister already pays £300 a month to get to work and now he might have to pay more next year - all to ride overcrowded trains that are constantly delayed. This morning his train was delayed by half an hour. Then when it finally arrived he discovered that they cut his station from the journey to "save time". So he ended up at least an hour late to work. Not a good day to announce fare increases. I got lots of angry texts from him, lol. Thank goodness I only have to walk 5 minutes to get to work. No wonder so many people just go on benefits when you have to cough up so much just to get to work. Why in the world did they ever privatize them? I even hear conservatives moaning about how it hasn't worked out!

Well, before they privatised them they were horrible as well.  Late, old, dirty.  Then they all seemed to work for a while and now they don't so much.

I think the problem is the way they have done it.  So someone owns the line and someone else owns the rolling stock and someone else owns whatever else there is.

Diana, there's a facebook group called "Bring Back British Rail".  Also, a petition--I think you can get the link to it on the facebook group. Personally, I think the cost of rail travel is a disgrace.  It costs more to do my commute on the train than by car, by like £20 per week!  Absurd.  And no discount for commuters, which is incomprehensible to me.

Just joined it. My Mister has a rail card and was flabbergasted when he found out he couldn't use it for his commute to work. He's talking about finding another job closer to home because the fares already take enough out of his salary! I don't know what we would do if I had to commute by train every day.

I'm also a member of that group on FB. The train system was infinitely better before privatisation. I remember.

However, for me, it's still an excellent deal. Traveling long distances on my own, I never spend nearly as much on train fare as I would for petrol. So I'll always defend train travel. I think it's brilliant.

But it could be better, and it did used to be better.

It is almost 6,000 (a little less, not quite sure how much) now to go from Cambridge to London with an underground pass.

Good Lord, that's obscene! And here I am moaning about £300 a month. Wow....£818.70 would cover our rent and groceries and council tax for a month with enough left over for a takeaway.

Standing room only too most of the time....

I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

He travels from Gloucestershire to London (Soho).  That's only the current price.  It's set to rise by 6-11% in January (depending on which report is correct) or by 20% in the next 2 years.   :(
