Unfortunately we were only ever able to make it to one event. The last two were cancelled for varying reasons, and I only just moved here in November so I missed the ones before. They were all in restaurants or pubs, from what I've seen. Meetup.com tends to have a lot of groups floating around, and they do a bunch different things like going out to movies together, restaurants, pubs, walks/hikes, or other things like that (of course, they are not really geared toward the expat community). Salisbury is such a small place, though, that a lot of the time we have to look into traveling to other cities like Southampton - although we do have a couple nice pubs, the Salisbury Cathedral, and are only 20 minutes away or so from Stonehenge.
We're totally interested in maybe arranging something similar in the future. I 100% know what you mean about having no social life! I'm looking for work at the moment, so my social life is pretty nonexistent and I do most of my communicating with people via Facebook and such.
Austin's a lovely place to live, though perhaps my opinion may be a little biased.
I miss it dearly, but enjoy traveling and other cultures enough to have made the big move. I've never been to Oregon myself, but have also heard that Portland is considered to be very similar to Austin.
When did you move over to Southampton? When does your wife come?
If you're interested in arranging any sort of meetup or event in the future, I'm sure we could manage to work something out. (:
