One way ticket booked!
« on: October 23, 2012, 04:17:29 AM »
Just wanted to share that I have booked my one way ticket to the UK! I wasn't really sure that I would ever be at this point and now that it is here it is a little strange. I am feeling mixed emotions, excitement and fear. I will be leaving the States on December 18th. I actually got a good deal on Expedia using bargain fare. I have 2 stops (one in Copenhagen) but was able to get my ticket for $600. I can't wait to be with my husband (finally) and start our journey together instead of living separate lives. Wish me luck as prepare myself for this journey. So not looking forward to packing!! Any tips for packing or how to spend my remaining time here are appreciated!

So exciting! Good luck with the packing and I hope that you have a great flight!

Tip for packing: packing cubes. I love them. You can stuff a lot of clothes and things in them, and then it is like playing Tetris in your suitcase. Also, I always pay the airline for an extra suitcase/overweight charges. It is SO much cheaper than shipping things!  ;D

Congratulations! I just arrived on Sunday myself on my one way ticket. It is strange not to have a set return date!

Yes! I paid for 3 extra. :P I usually always use packing cubes and folders, etc, but I found that it was better to actually use my clothes to insulate breakables (I brought some favorite mugs, decorative items, dishes that were given to us for our wedding, etc.) I also laid out the empty suitcases and tried to balance them out between clothes vs. stuff, etc... I'm visual, so it helped to see it all laid out.

I've also left some stuff that I just couldn't bring this time in carry on bags for my family to bring over when they come to visit next year! Hey, I figure it's a small "fee" for free accommodations here in my flat. ;)

Thank you both for the replies! It always amazes me how many people are going through the same thing issues! I definitely plan on bringing extra bags with me! I don't want to pay to ship boxes. I actually looked up baggage allowance on my flight and I think I am allowed 10! I am hoping I need less than 5  :o What are packing cubes? I will have to look into them. I was thinking about using those space saver bags. I have also done the insulating trick with clothes and fragile items, it works well! The next big hurdle will be resigning from my job  :-\\\\ I like my job and I think my boss is going to take it hard. It has always been this idea that was far away and suddenly it has materialized. That must sound strange, haha.

I'm using space saver bags, and they seem to be doing wonders for me thus far. I'm only travelling with two checked suitcases, and I'm starting to wonder if I'll even need the second one (mostly just taking clothes with me).  Now, however, it looks like I'll be able to fit all my clothes in one, then pack the other with whatever else I feel like I want.  :D

They're probably not a good idea if you plan on taking breakables though.

Resigning from my job was very difficult for me, as well.  I consider my coworkers to be my family... they'll be the hardest for me to leave behind, I think.  Hope your boss doesn't take it too hard!
