US Smarties sound pretty boak-tastic to me.

UK Smarties are lovely. But I do agree that I miss the delicious chemical colours and flavours!  :-X  When I was little, we used to lick the red ones and then rub the red all over our lips to make lipstick!

This about the colours has made me remember when my dad would buy the pistachios that had been dyed red for us to eat. Our hands would be red for days! Once they banned the red dye pistachios became far too expensive for us to buy.

I actually happened to find them at the local Tesco Express tonight! They also had the coconut ones (? I think? They're in a blue bag.)

Around here you can usually only get the peanut m & ms also--but sometimes the plain pop up---in fact I bought some last night and Home and Bargains.

I always see both plain and peanut in the shops - and quite often coconut as well. However, the only ones I'd buy are peanut butter and I haven't seen those.

If you can stand the super sweetness of them, Reese's Pieces are really good in cookies. I think Sainsbury's still have them. Might have to take a look for some when I'm there today!  :D

The blue ones are crispy not coconut. The coconut come in a white bag :)

I think US plain M&Ms taste different from the UK ones and I prefer the US version. I'd have my parents send some if they were sending a package. When I was in the UK, I'd have peanut or crispy.

Chary, I never saw peanut butter in the UK and they were always requested by my UK coworkers (along with Jolly Ranchers) when I'd make a trip to the US.

They do taste different! DH insists that I'm crazy when I say there's a difference. I'll happily eat both, but there is definitely a difference. I'm glad I'm not crazy.  :)

*makes a note to bring back a few bags of peanut butter m&m's* At this rate my carry on is going to be nothing but sweets and foods! Speaking of which, what exactly do you need to go through the declaration line in the airport for in regards to food? I'm only planning on bringing back candy/sweets and possibly a few 1/2 litre bottles of original mt. dew. I'd love to bring back some of my home canned jams and jellies, especially the grape ones (since it's well nigh on impossible to find grape jelly here!!!), but I don't know how they would be received once I go through customs...

These are the two things that seem to always make their way to the UK whenever my colleagues go to the US--which makes me a happy lady :) (However, I may have to put in a special request for Twizzlers--as they are my go-to movie snack!)

I recently had "Fizzers" which I thought would be just like US Smarties.  But they were better! I for some reason love anything fizzes in my mouth!!

Me too!!

And while I really love peanut butter M&Ms, I have to say I don't get the appeal of Jolly Ranchers. Such an intensely artificial flavour! Blech.

Perhaps, although UK Smarties have been around longer than M&Ms, so maybe it's that M&Ms are the faux-Smarties :P. (Smarties were developed in 1937, M&Ms in 1941).

No, M&M's are what used to be called Treats in the UK although I think they only had brown shells (like Minstrels which were plain Treats)....changed to M&M's about the same time that Marathons became Snickers.

Unfortunately we don't have peanut butter M&M's in the UK and I love those....one of my first purchases when we go to the States in 2 weeks!

No, I know that - it was a joke :P.

Too often you see the opinion that the US product came first and is superior, and then the UK made a bad imitation of it afterwards... I was just pointing out that Smarties were around long before M&Ms were even thought of :P.
