The End of Hostess
« on: November 17, 2012, 01:26:30 PM »
Looks like anyone wanting Twinkies better get their loved ones out to the shops in the USA and hoard them

http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/a-eulogy-for-the-humble-hostess-twinkie/2012/11/16/1bb1e3c0-300c-11e2-a30e-5ca76eeec857_story.html

Recently I've been to a few different markets doing a bit of Thanksgiving grocery shopping (I'm currently in the States for a few more years before moving to the UK) and I can tell you that there were NO twinkies on the shelves! I had seen a bunch of people joking about buying all the hostess cakes they could get their hands on but it seems that some people actually went out and did it!  It's crazy over here!

Even tho I have never eaten any of their products (because they looked gross to me) I am sort of sad to see that the company has closed.

Been around a long time... Kinda sad.

What a shame, especially for those losing their jobs due to this.

Hostess was a big part of my childhood... Twinkies, Ding Dongs, Chocodiles, Snowballs, Cupcakes, Suzy-Qs... and the fruit pies!

In the next town to me, we had some sort of a Hostess discount store... i think it was probably stuff that was about to go out of date, or something, and everything was like half price.  My mom used to go there and stock up on all the cakes, pies and Wonder Bread, and bung it all in the freezer.   Memories!

Yeah, 18,000 people losing their jobs :\\\'(

Oh I forgot about the fruit pies, but that just sparked a memory of getting an apple one to celebrate getting (one of a few in my life, clutz I am) a cast off my leg!

According to this article, there's no need to hoard Twinkies.

http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2012/11/attention-people-buying-twinkies-for-50-online-the-twinkie-is-not-extinct/265387/

Quote from: The Atlantic
The Twinkie will almost certainly survive when some company buys it as a distressed price in the Hostess fire sale and continues to produce the awful little snacks. Among the leading contenders: Kellogg, Campbell Soup, and Grupo Bimbo -- the parent company of Sara Lee, and Entenmann's, and other snacks only somewhat less artery-stuffing than a Twinkie.

My Mom used to do the same thing-except it was a Dolly Madison store.  I don't remember buying bread at the grocery store much, it was always from the day old bakery.
Didn't Hostess used to do chocolate pies as well?  I loved the apple pies, but always wondered why it said 'made with real fruit filling' on them.  I mean, it is an apple pie-what else would be in there?

Hubby worked  with a few people while we were in the States. He was the receiver for a major New England grocery store. He knew some of the salesmen and merchandisers, and delivery drivers. He immediately started talking about the different products that I didn't even realize were in danger.
We also grew up going to the discount store down the road that had all the snack cakes and bread. Its a shame. I always loved a snoball :)

A different one, I think... this was on North Main in Corona, just before the Norco/Hamner Ave border.  I remember it being just across the road from Wendys, as when I worked at Wendy's in high school, we used to go over there and buy boxes of gingerbread cookies to dip into the Frosties!  :)

We must not have had this brand in California... I've never heard of it.  Regional differences.  We didn't have Little Debbie, either, which i have heard lots of folk talk about on this board.

And this is only just barely on topic, but the other day i had a chocolate coated Belgian waffle... they are individually wrapped in a pack of 5 in Tesco... and it tasted exactly like those Hostess and Dolly Madison mini chocolate donuts (6-pack... you could get chocolate, crumb or powdered sugar) we used to get as kiddies.

It's a Philadelphia based company. I think they just serve the Northeast. I miss them!
