Can you bring homemade baked goods into the UK?
« on: December 09, 2012, 12:56:14 AM »
I'm flying from the US to the UK for the holidays, to visit my boyfriend. I'd really like to bake a tin of cookies, fudge, etc. for him & his boys, but I'm not sure if this is allowed? I can't seem to find an exact answer on the customs site, so I thought maybe someone here might have dealt with this before? Also, do I need to declare them on my customs form, and go through the longer line?

thanks in advance! happy holidays:)

My parents were just here and she brought the contents of her fridge! Including a dozen NYC bagels, a lb of tomatoes, bananas, salads, and a giant bag of home made chocolates. So I say yes you can bring home baked stuff in, but it probably depends on the day and the IO and the customs people etc

You're not allowed to bring in any fresh meat, fruit, veg or dairy products from outside the EU (so I'm not sure how your parents managed to bring in tomatoes, bananas or salad, racheeeee, as they are banned goods - the US border is very strict on that, and the UK border is supposed to be too), but canned and packaged products, as well as baked products should be okay.

Weirdly it depends on the fruit and veg but it's actually fine to bring stuff in. I always thought it was a massive no, but that's into the US. The UK seems laxer.

You can’t bring meat, meat products, milk, dairy products or potatoes into the UK from most countries outside the EU.

You can bring up to 2 kilograms (kg) of fruit and vegetables (except potatoes) into the UK as long as they are:

in personal baggage
for you and your family or friends - you can’t sell them
free from signs of pests and diseases

You can also bring:

egg products, eggs and honey (2kg in total)
fish (20kg in total or one fish, whichever is the heaviest) - this must be fresh and gutted, cooked, cured, dried or smoked

So yeah chocolate and baked goods are fine.
