Where to get a big turkey?
« on: December 09, 2012, 09:06:49 PM »
I'm a bit shocked at the tiny turkeys available at the supermarket. Tiny turkeys with huge price tags!  (8lb. turkey for 25 quid??!!  :o )

Does anyone know where to get a decent size turkey (at least 18lbs.) that won't cost an arm and a leg?

Thank you!

I just had this discussion with my mom when she was here last week, turkeys here are super expensive. Last year I bought a 6 kilo turkey and it cost mr £45! This year I am doing a rib of beef.  I don't personally think there are any cheap turkeys out there! Gobble gobble.

Watch for sales at Asda. They do half priced turkeys at different points in the holiday season.

Frozen ones are cheaper I think. Lidl? Iceland?

Asda have an 18lber at £24

I was a bit shocked at the prices myself! Luckily I don't need a big one, which is a damn good thing because I don't think I could fit one in my oven!

A few years ago when I did a giant Thanksgiving party, I got a huge one from a local turkey farm and because I bought it straight from the farm, I didn't have to pay the middleman and got a great price and it was one of the best turkeys I ever had. Maybe you have a turkey farm somewhere near you?

I would love to get one from a farm and there are plenty of places around here to do that ... but they're super-expensive. It's far cheaper to get a rubbish old supermarket bird, so that's what we usually wind up doing.  :-\\\\

I get mine delivered from Smithfield meat market as I'm a bit of a sucker for the lovely subtle gamey taste you get from the organic/free range ones.

There's a bloke I know and if you email him he'll get you what you need from the market and bring it to your house.

I have had one delivered via a butcher from bramble farm before which was really nice.

Today I checked out two farms that are closeby, but they were quite expensive as well. I think I will go with Asda, as I can order a fresh one to our local store. We use most of it for turkey curry, turkey stew and turkey pot pie, that's why I like a big one. :)

Thanks so much for everyone's suggestions! :)
