What's on your Christmas Menu this year?
« on: December 10, 2012, 04:05:53 PM »
I'm off to J's parents house for the traditional Christmas turkey -  Likewise, Boxing Day will be a Roast Beef, veg, Yorkshire puddings, etc.  It will be very good meals and very traditional.

I'm planning on making something special for J and I on Christmas Eve and will post it here once I figure out what I'm doing...

What are you making?

I'm doing a leg of lamb... doing it the way Nigel Slater does in this video...

Also doing roasties and sauteed sprouts with chestnuts, onion and bacon.

That's all I am sure about so far... no idea about pudding yet.

I'm doing venison, either roasted or a wellington, if I get ambitious.  Served with celeriac puree, mushrooms Bordelaise, potatoes (roasted or dauphinoise) and braised red cabbage.  Probably port wine or redcurrant gravy.  I made a Christmas cake, but we'll also have steamed puddings because Waitrose does a gorgeous toffee pecan one.  Boxing day will be at DH's parents' and we'll just have a cold buffet--no room for a sit-down meal what with grandchildren and my dad coming to visit this year!

This will be the first Christmas since R's mum passed away, so we are all pitching in to do the cooking. His sister and aunt are doing the turkey and trimmings, and I am tasked with the nut loaf for the multiple vegetarians in the family. I'm helping R make a Christmas cake, and I am going to try my hand at truffles this weekend. It's going to be very sad without his mum as she was a real personality and loved the fun of Christmas, but I'm glad we are all coming together to make it special.

Well, there is only three of us for Christmas dinner, but we're still doing what my family has always done. A turkey and a ham with all the trimmings. Of course they will be small ones but we'll still have them. Not sure what we're doing for Boxing Day yet. Hubby's family usually spend the day visiting at one of the brother's houses so we'll probably end up at one of their houses.

DF's mum is coming down for Christmas, so it'll be three of us. (First Christmas in London for DF, despite living here for over 10 years!)

He bought a turkey crown at Tesco that feeds 6...and I'm vegetarian. :P His mum doesn't eat large quantities of meat, so I'm guessing he'll be eating loads of leftovers for a while. I got cheese/garlic "chicken" kievs at Tesco the other day, so that'll work well for me.

DF also plans to make roast potatoes, and we'll probably steam/roast/mash some veg as well. I'm going to make PioneerWoman's creamy herbed potatoes, because they're awesome.

I already made a dulce de leche cheesecake squares that are in the freezer, so we'll probably have that. If I ever find pumpkin puree I may make a pumpkin pie, too. And DF bought single-serving Christmas puddings for each of us.

A proper traditional Christmas dinner, same as every year. Turkey, roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, sprouts, stuffing, cranberry, gravy, etc.  :)

Nibbles on Christmas Eve, and whatever we can find marked down at the grocery.  We are within walking distance of a Sainsburys and there are bargains to be had.
Ham on Christmas day with various sides.
I've made my first Christmas cake as MrRed5 wanted a homemade one, and the 9 year old wants a carrot cake. In the past I've made pound cake, jam cake, and red velvet cakes for Christmas.
I'll do a beef roast for boxing day.
It will just be the 4 of us.  MrRed5's parents will stop by for a brief visit on boxing day.
However you celebrate I hope everyone has a lovely holiday!  :)

Nibbles on Christmas Eve,

We do the same! Posh nibbles and prosecco. Last year we actually had an assembly line make-your-own-sushi party which was really fun, but I think it'll just be nibbles this year.

And Irish coffee for Christmas morning. Of course. Followed by Buck's Fizz. Of course.

Just the two of us so I"m planning on making a dinner I saw on "Barefoot Contessa":

stuffed pork loin, cauliflower gratin and roasted carrots, washed down with champagne.

Yum!

Mmmm...  Yummy yummy meals planned!!

Oh the festive drinks are sure fun!
I've managed to at least figure out that Nigella's "Poinsettia cocktail" will feature somewhere in my Christmas boozing -either Christmas Eve or bringing to make at J's parents. Or both.   Drinking is usually helpful there  ;)

And of course Bailey's in the coffee Christmas morning, that's tradition for me.

I've got ideas floating about but nothing set in stone yet......
