Name change in the US after being married in the UK?
« on: December 20, 2012, 08:02:58 PM »
Hi All,
My husband (UKC) and I (USC) were married in the UK but have since moved back to the States. I finally am getting around to changing my name legally with Social Security, etc. however am concerned around not having a US Marriage License.
We have a Marriage Certificate from when we were married in the UK, but will this work?? There seems to be a lot of specification for the marriage license needing a raised seal, etc. which our certificate from the UK does not have.
Just thought I would see if anyone has had a similar experience and could shed some light on this for me???
Any help is much appreciated!
Thanks,
Jen

I would think it would definitely work. Many people get married outside of the US.

Have you already changed your name on your U.S. passport? If so that means your Marriage Certificate is probably sufficient proof, since you would've already changed it with another federal agency.

Edit: Clarified that it's your U.S. passport, in case you have one of another country too.

I just went through this process myself a few months ago when my husband (UKC) finally got his visa and joined me here in the US.  Did not have any problems with our very colorful and ornate Isle of Man marriage certificate, which does not have a raised seal, in any place except for one.  It was a AAA office where I went to have my drivers license changed.  The woman acted like we were criminals trying to pull a fast one and refused to process a new license for me. She kept holding the certificate up to the light and looking it over with so much scrutiny we were dumbfounded. It boiled down to her being ignorant and having a chip on her shoulder, because we simply drove to another AAA office and were in and out withing 15 minutes, new license in hand.  The woman at the second office was delighted to learn we'd been married in such an interesting place and said if the certificate was good enough for the social security office (which had already processed my name change) then it was good enough for her.
