A Good Coffee Maker????
« on: January 17, 2013, 11:32:02 PM »
Hello all...am in need of a bit of help. I have been looking online for the last few days for a good filter coffee maker. I have a nice pod one, but really just want some nice filter coffee.
I have been trying to find one that has a metal thermal jug (instead of glass). The only ones I seem to be able to find that aren't glass are the machines that grind and brew (which are around £100 or more). Also would like it to have timer setting. I did find some nice ones on Amazon, but they are shipped from Germany and I would have to get an adapter plug. Not a huge deal, but figured I would ask about first as would prefer to just have one with a UK plug.
Any help or recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thx.

Sorry, I don't know about the filter coffee maker, but I was wondering about which pod one you have.  I have a keurig in the US and would like the UK equivalent.  I received a Tassimo for Christmas from my step daughters (very thoughtful and generous gift) but I don't know anything about it and won't be in the UK until March to see it in person.  So I was wondering which you had and why you liked it and if you know anything about the tassimo.  I looked at the pod products on line, but they don't have much of a decaf line and currently, I am only drinking decaf.

Thank you!

This is the coffee machine we have:

The thermal jug is pretty excellent on this one. Stays hot for hours. No timer setting, but we bought a timer plug separately. I prefer it, because you can set it to come on at 6am and off at 7am (or whatever times) on Monday to Friday and all day at weekends. Whatever suits you. It means we just have to set the coffee every night and never worry about the timer.

This is similar to the timer we have:

I did have a Senseo for a while, and loved the coffee on it, but then OH got me a Tassimo. My parents have a Keurig (which I LOVE) and I got to use it while back in the States over Christmas. I wouldn't say they are the same, tho. The Tassimo is good and makes a pretty nice cup of coffee. My machine is one from 2 years ago(so newer models may differ?) But where the Keurig has the button to fill a mug, you have to actually hold down a button on the Tassimo to add more.
I don't know about other decaf options, but just had a quick look and didn't find much. There is a Decaf Kenco, a Carte Noire Decaf Espresso(for making the lattes and such). I also think the Café Hag line is decaf? I could be wrong as I don't do decaf.
The closest I think you'll get to Keurig is probably going to be the Nescafe Dolce Gusto or possibly the Nespresso? Not sure as I don't have either, tho the Dolce Gusto has caught my eye. hth.

I was actually just looking at this one this morning. I also like that it doesn't seem to take up much space. How do you find the pouring/spout on it? Does it leak/splatter? Also, how about filling it up? I like ones that are easy to pour the water in, so you don't have to move the machine about all over the place.
I never even thought about using a timer plug! I have a few from Christmas...kind of ugly to look at, but might be able to set it up so I don't see it, somehow. Thx!

I have a Tassimo and I love it, one advantage is that you can buy the pods at the supermarket. The pods make a lovely cup of coffee with a beautiful crema on it. But I like that the pods are readily available at every supermarket. I like thr nespresso machines, but you have to go to a speciality totes tore to buy them,

How big is that one, Princess L?  I want to get something small -- no more than 4 cups (meaning 2 mugs!) I did see this one at Lakeland

but not sure it's any good. (?)

I gave my daughter my Senseo, which has run perfectly for nearly 7 years.  I wish the pods were easier to find, but I ordered her some Marley Coffee and Tea Pods (recommended by Senseo), and she likes them a lot. I bought myself a Keurig Mini and love it, because I can have tea with it, and she can have coffee when she visits every week.  The Senseo is perking right along for her.

It's true, it takes up less space than any coffee maker we've had! As for the pouring spout, I remember that was the only negative part of the reviews we read. But once we got it we wondered what problem other people had?? It doesn't leak. Never spills. I think it's quite cleverly designed. And pouring the water in is easy. The whole top lifts off on a hinge.

It's "10 cups" which is smaller than most. Really it makes 4 mugs' worth. But I often only do a half a pot which is perfect for me on my own. My mom had one (I think Cooks brand?) that only filled up one or 2 travel mugs. She used that a LOT on one visit, but it's since been put away because it was too much trouble for the amount it made!

I used to have a Senseo, and always bought the pods (including flavoured ones!) off eBay.

I just want to thank everyone for all of the input. I have decided to go with the Morphy Richards Nesta. No need for a jug at all as the coffee stays in the machine. It dispenses like the soda things at the fast food places (which I find quite cool!) Have been like a madman ordering flavoured (or flavoured :P) coffee for the last two days. Plus the machine also comes with a travel mug! I love free stuff. Not that I need another one as I seem to unconsciously collect them. Thanks again, all!
