Visiting America!!
« on: January 27, 2013, 08:42:42 PM »
We are planning a visit back to America in May-June.  It will be the first time I have been back since November 2010!!

Does anyone have any advice for getting cheap flight ect...

I am looking at renting a car while we are out there, by my Maryland driving license will have expired by then and I don't see the need to renew it.  I know you can rent a car with a UK lisence, but do they charge more??

My father is a travelling expert! He always told me to buy tickets directly through the airline you choose to travel, and buy them no more than 4 weeks before the date you leave, but no less than 1 week. Those are the best rates!

I got better rates from the UK versions of the US sites for car rentals by quite a bit.
August 2008 - Tier 4 - Student Visa
February 2010 - Tier 1 - PSW
January 2012 - FLR(M)
June 2014 - ILR (finally!)

I have found skyscanner.net to be the cheapest so far, but will keep that in mind.

Using www.rentalcars.com I have found all inclusive rates for the US that can only be accessed by travelers when using a UK license, and these rates are lower than I could get using my US license and paying for insurance.

That seems like a good website, they quoted £199 for a Ford Focus (or similar) for 10 days.  I could cope with a Focus, I have one as a company car in the UK.

We usually book are car hire through sky cars using
Our UK driving licenses and it includes all
Insurances. I let my Ohio license expire years ago
As I have lives in the UK for 10 years now
And felt I properly learned I drive here not
In the US!!

My Maryland lisence expires on the 28th of April 2013, so just a couple weeks before we go to America!
