PS3 Games to recommend?
« on: February 05, 2013, 06:47:10 PM »
So Mr MLG has been doing his Masters, and I am playing video games when he is writing essays. Late returner / Atari kid to the video game thing.

So far, I have done Oblivion and Skyrim and now am on the Assassin Creed's thing. I have tried Final Fantasy, and though beautiful, the game play is not for me. I like ones with puzzles in them as well.

Games I thought I might like (and I am not too concerned about buying the latest thing - though may try Lara Croft): Red Dead Redemption, Darksiders II?

Based on that, what games should I try? Thoughts?  :)

I quite liked Red Dead, though I'm a horseperson so I'll admit just riding around is appealing. ;) I'm currently playing L.A. Noire (also by Rockstar), but don't enjoy it as much (it's good, but not quite as action-packed, and the car is much harder to control than the horse!).

I should also resume Dragon Age, because that's quite fun (RPG style, no puzzles yet that I've seen though). I've got Origins, because I'm also not too concerned about playing the latest game, but once I get through it I'll probably get the sequel(s?).

I don't know if you're into platformers at all, but I got the Ratchet & Clank trilogy and it's quite fun (involves a few puzzles as well). I'm only on #1, though, still have 2 and 3 to get to.

LA Noire is so tedious.  Skip it.

Bioshock for sure.. the mini-hack game sounds like just your thing.  The plot for Bio2 is awful but the MP is fun.

Husband loved Red Dead.  I was hopelessly addicted to GTA4 for a long time.  The DLCs are fun for it too.

For a simple shoot 'em up, Gotham City Imposters is fun.  You can download an hour trial for free in PSN Store and then buy the unlock if you like it.  It's a MP only game.

Have you thought of Portal or Portal 2?  Those games are almost all puzzle-based.  Anything in the Half-Life2 Orange Box or by Valve is worth a try.

If you liked Skyrim, the Fall Out series is fun too.  Fall Out 3 or New Vegas.. big maps, puzzles, etc.

Just realizing.. being self-employed and married to a geeky gamer has changed me! lol  I'd never picked up a video game controller until I married him and now the PS3 is basically mine.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

Limbo's supposed to be amazing (very puzzle-y), but because it's so dark, and involves huge spiders that chase you around, I've only watched DF play it and not tried it myself.

I have tried Braid (on the computer, not PS3), and it's excellent. Pure puzzle.

Gonna have to second the previous posters and vouch for Red Dead, Fallout and Portal. Especially Portal! Think FPS puzzle game. Fallout's also by Bethesda, and is quite similar to the Elder Scrolls series for that reason.

I am also in the middle of playing LA Noire and it's been enjoyable so far, in my opinion.

Also, Borderlands! Love that game. No puzzles, really, but it was lots of fun.

I hate LA Noire, why bother creating this gorgeous city I can't interact with?
Also I find the interrogation system a frustrating exercise in trial and error. I KNOW WHO DID THIS CRIME, GIVE ME THE OPTION TO ACCUSE.

MLG, you'd probably love Mass Effect 2,  I know it sounds weird to come in at a second title, BUT you play a 15 minute mini game which introduces you to all the choices you should have made in ME1 and everything is explained. It's really nice, there is combat but it's not reaction based, there's puzzles/hacking etc, the story is engrossing and you can choose your own path, the dialogue tree choices are impactful. Overall, it's great.

Did you play Fallout 3? It's the same engine as skyrim but set in a post apocalyptic 50s style America, I prefer it to Skyrim due to the Karma system, in skyrim it seems like I can do whatever I want without consequences.

I don't really consider Limbo to be a puzzle game, it's got simple puzzles but is more of a platform game, I like Limbo but it's more art style than anything else.

Stacking is a great puzzle game, think Russian dolls, and I think Echochrome is one of the most inventive puzzle games out there (if you rotate the camera in 3D it changes your whole game field) you get a dude from one end to the other.

If you've not played it, go out and buy Portal 2, buy it NOW. If you like puzzles at all, even slightly,  it's the game to get. Check to see if your husband has the "Orange box" already, if he does you'll have the original Portal game, if not go out and buy Portal 2. :)

If you're happy running around pretending your Batman, then Arkham Asylum (the first one) is great, some puzzles, the way you approach combat is very paced and well thought out (I will swoop down from this gargoyle and kill this bloke, then hide here and blah blah blah) overall it's a great and atmospheric 3rd person game.

Def Red Dead - I've got LA Noire but not started it yet.

I'm a big sports game fan as well - so for me MLB The Show, FIFA, NHL and Madden!

So many suggestions - thanks!  :)

Almost went for Mass Effect and the Asylum  Batman one, but wanted to use up my voucher amount, so Red Dead it was this time...

Have Fallout 3, but haven't played it yet! Looking forward to it and happy gaming UK-Yers!  :D
