first US or UK passport for baby--is there a way to speed this up??

With my daughter, I remember appointments not being available right away and it taking 2 months from when we registered her birth until we received her US passport in the mail (about a 4 month process start to finish). I am pregnant with baby #2 at the moment and he is due June 20. My husband may be taking a new job that would require him to go to the US at the end of July/early August and I am not sure what we should do about traveling with the baby. I can't really imagine staying behind with a newborn and a toddler to take care of plus being responsible for moving ourselves out of our house, selling on our furniture, coordinating movers, ending our lease, etc. with all of that going on (especially not knowing when we can even travel as it will depend on when the passport comes back). Is there anything we can do when the baby is born to quickly get a passport for him? I know he needs to enter on a US passport but if we can get him a UK passport quickly then I would be willing to chance flying over with him using that passport rather than waiting ages for the US one. Any thoughts or advice?

We travelled back to the states with my DD when she was 7 weeks old.  I booked an appt at the embassy for like 2 weeks after her due date.  You an can book an appt before the baby is born and just use "baby" as the first name.  I forget how far in advance I made the appt, but I remember I was on the website quite a lot looking for when they opened up appts.  We had her passport back in about 3-4 weeks. 

We also got the UK passport before we travelled too, but I forget the details on that.  It was 4 years ago, now, so maybe someone who did it recently can let you know how long processing times are. 

 

I didn't realize we could book the appointments in advance--when I look at the site it wants the date of birth and the baby's name. Can you just use your due date and then change the date of birth on the day of your appointment??

It could have just been a busy time of year but my daughter was born in spring and I was thinking since this baby is coming in summer, it may still be a busy time...

Yes, Due date and just generic Baby for the first name are good enough to book an appointment and will be corrected during the application process.

Ohh, that will REALLY help to speed things up--thank you for letting me know that was possible! I wasn't sure how stringent they were on those kinds of  things. I'll email just to confirm things haven't changed, but I think it actually sounds doable now that I know that...hopefully passport won't be as long of a wait as it was last time and we can get it back in a month or so! We did the same -- booked in advance.  We went to the embassy at 2 weeks and had his passport back 3ish weeks later.  We didn't travel right away, but with an ill parent back in the US, we needed to be able to hop on a plane ASAP if necessary.
