FBAR foreign postcode
« on: February 20, 2013, 12:54:06 PM »
Hi, all,  I hope there is a simple answer for this.  I'm trying to e-file an FBAR, but it doesn't like foreign postcodes (oddly, as this is a form for foreign institutions!).  For the banks, the form says "postcode, if known," so maybe I'm safe just leaving the postcodes blank, even though I know them.

But for myself, I have no US address and must use the UK one.  It says to enter a foreign postcode as "an alphanumeric value".  Is anyone else having this issue, and what is the best thing to do?

I thought you had to file by paper if you lived overseas.  That is what I have always done.

Yep, that's the website.  Thing is, I have found other websites with people mentioning that they used it (abroad), but they say it was okay and no one mentions the post code issue.  Now if I end up sending it paper, I'll have to find how to deregister (something else I'm having trouble finding...)

Try removing the space from between the two parts of your postcode.

Thanks, yes, I’ve tried that too.  It still got flagged.

I emailed their helpdesk, and after three working days got a response which asked me to send another email, or call, “so the problem could be resolved,” and gave a ticket number (security, I guess).  At that point I decided to give up and paper file.

I thought I could save a little money by e-filing, but the time I’ve wasted on it is worth more than the money I would have spent – and ended up spending anyway!  >:(

Now I’d like to unenroll for it (as this is my last FBAR), but nowhere do they even hint that you ever might want to.

According to the IRS section of the US embassy in London they are looking in to this issue - watch this space.
