Easter
« on: March 25, 2013, 06:32:11 PM »
Anyone doing anything nice for Easter?

We hardly ever eat Lamb as the boy never ate it much growing up and I never think about it, so I'll probably get some lamb in, but in the style of my people will probably make Nasi Goreng and Satay Kambing, maybe some rendang as well.

Anyone making hot cross buns or Colomba or doing something fun/interesting?

Nothing much here.  We're planning to go to church, and then to the pub.  And our local takeaway does some KILLER grilled lamb chops, so maybe stop off there on the way home.

We're up to a pub/inn in the Lake District. Hopefully, won't have to ski there. So big breakfasts & hearty pub grub - would not be surprised if there's lamb, hopefully a Herdwick! Lots of booze, particularly if we are snowbound.

Will be driving on Easter itself, so nothing special -
However, I must say, I love this time of year for the abundance of hot cross buns, hot cross bun loaf, and cadbury creme eggs and mini eggs! Mmmmm......

DW is working Sat whilst I do a pub crawl with my pal! We have Hot cross buns for tomorrow, I think we'll have lamb on sunday - if not a roast we have some lamb steaks in the freezer.
Perhaps a drive out Sunday or Monday if the weather is ok.

I am not a fan of hot cross buns, but I bought some today to give them another go. It's a teacake with some extra raisins (or whatever) & orange essence, and a floury cross on it (which originally I thought would be a lovely gooey sweet glaze cross, but no it's just a floury pastie thing)? Big whoop. My next tactic is to toast them & I'm sure I'll like that better because anything like that is better toasted, but still... I want to like them particularly because they're a pagan thing that predates Christianity entirely, but I just don't see what the special appeal is. Cinnamon rolls are much better!  ;D

I do love Cadbury creme eggs & all manner of chocolate though...nom nom nom nom nom.

I would agree, but they are quite nice toasted with lots of butter, but like you say, what isn't?

Yes, I meant to say with lots of butter! I also like Fat Rascals so much better, in addition to cinnamon rolls, but neither of these is particularly 'Easter'. I also wanted to try Simnel Cake this year, just never got around to it. My plan was to get over to Betty's for tea & have it - it didn't happen.  :P

I'm not really sure why but my family often does potato latkes on Easter, among other things. No one's Jewish so I don't know where the tradition came from but they're delicious! (And A LOT of work).

Easter bbq and a bit of Doctor Who. Plus there is an ale festival at our local pub, so it will be a weekend of pub lunches, jerk chicken and Polish chocolate cake (courtesy of the new housemate).

Nothing Easter-y planned at all, but hubby did surprise me with a big chocolate Easter egg this morning!  Is it me or does the emphasis in the UK seem to be on giant chocolate eggs while in the US it's more on big chocolate bunnies?

I bought some and was expecting a gooey frosting cross too.  Bit disappointed, they're alright, but I'd rather eat chocolate at Easter, haha!

We didn't really do anything special.  We aren't religious and we don't have family close by so it was just the two of us (I did Skype with mom, dad and my sisters yesterday).  We did have some lovely sunshine today and took a nice stroll along the seafront.

We had our family gathering yesterday. We had ham, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, green bean casserole, baked beans, deviled eggs and pasta salad. For dessert we had a couple cakes, ice cream, Jello jigglers and cookies.

After being in the UK the past three Easters, I missed hot cross buns this year. I suppose I could have made some or gone to a bakery to find some.

Nothing Easter-y planned at all, but hubby did surprise me with a big chocolate Easter egg this morning!  Is it me or does the emphasis in the UK seem to be on giant chocolate eggs while in the US it's more on big chocolate bunnies?

I don't think it is you. I looked all over each Easter I was there and it seemed there wasn't a chocolate bunny in sight. This year, I saw loads of bunnies, but no big chocolate eggs.

The bunnies are from German traditions.

There were just as many big eggs this year as ever round me.  The only bunnies I saw were the Malteser ones.
