Stella:
Thanks again for the info. I guess if canned worked for you then they will work for me as well.   Having been in the food industry for so long, if I was looking for something and couldn't find it at my local supermarket, one of my vendors was more than happy to get me a couple pounds at their cost.  I was spoiled in my previous jobs  ::)  I also worked for two different produce companies in Florida and that had benefits as well.  Thanks again for the help.

Oh, I can feel your pain.  :o

I am glad someone can understand. I check out websites of my favorite mexican food places in Arizona.  I am sad, I know ;)

Rose, did the Ormeau Rd shop ever have tomatillos? I've been told if any shop would have fresh ones it would be them but I haven't checked there. I near had a heart attack when I saw the tins in Sawers, I could not believe they actually had them. Other people have suggested they are easy enough to grow but I haven't gone down that road yet.

Maddie, have no fear, I have actually looked longingly at the online menu of one of my favorite holes in the wall back home. I know had bad it can be. But you learn to improvise and you can do some good Mexican here with the little available. There's a lot more available now than there was just a couple years ago, so it can only keep getting better!

Stella:

That is a great idea!  I am always so overwhelmed and claustrophobic when I go into the shop on the Ormeau Road that I have a tendency to over look items and kick myself after I have left. I am almost positive that I have seen them there.  I love that shop and wish I could drive there all by myself so I wouldn't have to drag my husband in there (no patience ::)).  I could spend hours in there and the people that run the shop are always so nice and accommodating to me which I do so appreciate after having been in some of the shops around here.  :-X  Well, I am starting on the Drivers licence bit and that will have to be my first solo excursion.
As far as growing tomatillo's, I do not have a greenhouse and I think that they would have to be grown inside one due to our cold climate.  I tried to grow Anaheim chilies this year inside our house and did not have any success.  I guess a greenhouse will have to be the only thing on my Christmas list this year. ;D

Great idea on the Ormeau Road shop, I guess where the husband and I will be going next weekend!  Thanks again!

Rose

Monterrey Jack.

Stella, did the cheese have "Montery Jack" labeled on it??  I have not found it anywhere in my area.  I had mexican food tonight, I just had to with all this good food chat.

Let me know if they have them there!

Also, have you tried the Philipino cafe in town yet? They have a small stock of philipino items (no tomatillos) which are mighty tasty. It's in the back of In Shops.

Stella:

I haven't tried the Filipino cafe.  In fact, I can honestly say the only Filipino food I have ever eaten was Pancit.  Is it good?  Is the cuisine comparable to Vietnamese or Thai?  The in shops that you are talking about, is that beside the High storey parking garage by chance?  There is a Jessops right up the street?  Let me know, thanks.

Stella, I am looking for montery jack cheese in the UK.  I have read you found some before, does it go by "montery Jack"?

Thanks,
Danielle

I just ordered and got some corn tortillas from the Cool chile company!!  Yum!!  Oh and a kit for mole and and OMG!!!  Happy dance!!!! Oh and flor de jamaica and masa harina and and ...YEAH!!!  Sorry not much on the cheese front but still  YEAH!

I am just trying to think what would be a good sub for jack chesse..... my Mexican friend used to use Queso Fresco with her food but they are from Mexico City, DF ...

I did buy a mexican cheese from Sainsbury that is okay.. tastes like a slightly nicer version of Velvetta type stuff with a bit of a kick up the butt....

I took off the wrapper so I can't tell you who makes it.  It was in self serve section of the Deli... will get the name and post it here.  I used it to make a creamy cheese dip with salsa and one with chili and it came out wonderful!  It is spicy though!

Hi Danielle, sorry for not catching this earlier. It's in the deli section, where they cut the cheese for you, as opposed to the pre-packaged cheese section. It's got red wax and a sticker that is like the US flag and it's called Monterrey Jack. Might even have a reference to California, not sure. But I find it in Morrisons/Safeway. Hope that helps. :)

Rose - yeah I think that's the same place. Down at the bottom end of the High Street? If you can find where the food is in the back of the In Shops mall, you're close, as it's off to its own past the food, right across from the Indian klotchy shop with all the doo-dahs. The food smelled really good but I haven't tried it yet - I asked the woman what she was making and she said, 'Philipino food', well, blow me down! lol. I did get some of the sauce packets they had for sale - they've like a pit-stop shop in the cafe - and it was lovely. I am thinking more like Caribbean food than Vietmanese but could be wrong.

Thanks Stella, I will check out the local Tesco to see if they have Montery Jack cheese.  I just placed an order on CoolChile, looking forward to its arrival. :D

The Cool Chile company has improved their corn tortillas, I ordered some last week, they have a new imported tortilla maker from Mexico.
