Hastings, It Looks Like
« on: June 19, 2013, 01:41:18 AM »
Hi, everyone.

My wife, who's British, and I have lived in England before. We lived in Brighton from 1990 to 1994. I liked it. Then she wanted to return to the states to do her residency at the Texas Medical Center.

Anyway, her family owns a two-bedroom townhouse in a crappy part of Hastings. Now, Hastings looks like a pretty interesting place, I've been researching it. We're looking to relocate sometime next year.

I look forward to getting to know you folks.

Call me Jay.

Hiya Jay.

Welcome :)

I'm not familiar with Hastings, but it sounds like you at least have your accomodation all worked out, which is always a major load off one's mind.

I'm from the Philly area and am now in West Yorkshire.  I really love it here.

I've heard good things about Hastings except that at times it can be over-run by the French...

Hi sonofasailor, glad to know you.

I'll be interested to see this French thing. Thanks for the heads up.

Welcome Blues,

That was one of my lamer attempts at being clever - Hastings being the spot of the Norman invasion of 1066. I was hoping it would go unnoticed....

Are you a blues (music) fan/musician?

Welcome Blues,

That was one of my lamer attempts at being clever - Hastings being the spot of the Norman invasion of 1066. I was hoping it would go unnoticed....

Are you a blues (music) fan/musician?

My life has been spent as a professional musician, and during that life I have played all kinds of horrible sh*t for a living. I was a studio player, played the nightclub shows, played in bands, I was basically the drummer for hire.

I'm skilled, or at least I was, in several disciplines, and I've composed a lot of jazz music, I went to music school, blah blah, but when I was just a kid I fell in love with Chicago blues, learned how to play the harmonica, I did a lot of studio work playing the harmonica, and now, having turned 60, that's what I want to devote my time to, playing blues music, plugging mu microphone into my old Fender amp and playing some blues music. I love it.

The last time I lived in England I played in an excellent blues band. I'm hoping to do that again. The English are great blues players, better than the Americans. It's true, it's amazing!

PS I have no idea why this is tiny and in this blue box like this. The fact that it's even an option shows that something is very wrong with this website.

My apologies for the inconvenience.

Bluesguy, I'm a musician myself. Love to welcome other musicians on here!!!  :)

Anyways, what you're doing is quoting, which shows up like this when you type:
[ quote ]    [ / quote ]

But you're doing is typing before the end quote box

[ quote ]  You're quoting and typing   [ / quote ]

Quote
Therefore, all your responses are ending up in here

You need to actually type after the last [/quote] :

[ quote ]  Music  [ / quote ]  Bluesguy types back...

hope that makes sense  :)

I have been attempting blues harp for quite a while - I have found it exceptionally difficult. I shoot for a sort of Jimmy Reed tweety overblow. The truth is I need to practice a lot more.

How do you mic?

I use a ribbon microphone made by Astatic. It's made to use with harmonica; it even has a volume knob. I plug that into a 1969 Fender Super Reverb amplifier, which gives me a real punchy sound and plenty of volume. I really need to take it into the shop; it's starting to get noisy.

Great news! Wonderful news! We won't be moving to Hastings, no. We now plan to move to London.

My wife is a medical professional, and she's just about through with her master's degree. She is used to working in teaching hospitals, hospitals that are involved in research, hospitals like the ones at the Texas Medical Center, and at Emory University, where she works now.

She was talking to my mother on the phone, saying how sad she was to have to say goodbye to that kind of place. So later I suggested that we move to London, where she'll be able to use that master's degree and work at that kind of institution.

We don't have anywhere to live in London. But we both know London well, and to say it's a step up from Hastings is...well, I like Hastings, but you know what I mean.

Well when you start gigging I can pop in and see you in London - Hastings would have been a bit of a stretch.
