Houses in the UK compared to the US and continent are a lot smaller in general. (Cos we have to squeeze 62 million of us into a tiny country!)

Not all furniture will fit in a UK house.  Most second or third bedrooms here are "box" rooms, so 6'' something by 6''.  And I don't even think a US sofa would fit through my front door.

We only have one piece of furniture that we are keeping which I would consider to be 'large' besides our bed [which is only a queen, but it's a four poster and comes apart down to almost nothing], and it will go in the dining room or kitchen [if it's an eat in]. It's a large hutch/country store shelf, and I will play it by ear with that piece. From what I have seen and experienced in my travels and visits, all of our furniture will be fine.  We only have a love seat and two chairs in the living room, our table and all other furniture comes apart to nothing, and we are leaving behind bulky dressers and replacing them.

The great thing about moving there as a family is I get to pick my house :) In fact, it is in the budget and plan for me to come by myself to make living arrangements once hubby gets a job offer. I will have my MIL there to help me, of course, but essentially the decision is mine alone, as I work from home and will be there most of the time with the kiddos ;), so I will be able to look for something that fits our needs.

In comparison to other European Nations, the population density of the UK is roughly equivalent to Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium (ranking roughly 50th out of 220ish nations worldwide). Most Northeastern States of the US have population densities greater than the UK.

Size comparisons to other European Nations places the UK above Romania, Belarus, Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia and Montenegro, Hungary, Portugal, Austria, Czech Republic, Ireland, Lithuania, Latvia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Slovakia, Estonia, Denmark, Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Slovenia and Luxembourg (discounting micro sates).

You can also look into pulley maids, they're drying racks that go to the ceiling, so perfect for letting sheets and towels dry appropriately.

Most of the flats I've had in Glasgow (apart from my current home!) had the pulley thing in either the kitchen or bathroom.

When we remodel the upstiars hall, tempted to put one in, even though we have a dryer (Kitchen ceiling too low..)

We had one in the flat in London --over the bath.  You did have to put up with dripping undies when you were in the tub but otherwise it was pretty good!

No spin cycle on your washing machine?

I've never seen one of those pully maids, and neither has my OH. I'd love to get one, but since we are renting, putting holes in the ceiling & wall probably won't be too acceptable.  :-\\\\ When we get around to buying a home, perhaps we'll put one in then!

Yes! I never had one personally when I was in Glasgow, because I always lived in relatively newer buildings with low ceilings, but all of my friends who lived in tenement flats had them. I only ever saw them in the entry/hallway though.

the kitchen pulleys were a nightmare, as clothes could pick up cooking odours.  My former MILs clothes always smelled of cabbage.

Am I the only one in the world who likes the aroma of cooked cabbage? The smell lets me know there is some cabbage somewhere nearby stewing....and I love cabbage.

And let me tell you, if a lady has about her a slight bacony aroma I get lathered up!
