Any Recent NI Number Applicants Out There?
« on: September 25, 2013, 02:05:00 AM »
I was trying to find a couple of answers to my questions, but all the NI number threads I found seemed several years old. Hopefully there are some more recent experiences out there.

I just arrived back in the UK on my ILE visa. When I first got my visa in 2011, I came over here to live, but it was only a few short months before hubby and I decided to return back to the US. During that time, I didn't apply for a NI number. We decided to return a few months ago, after my OH was offered a job back here in the UK.

My US company wants to keep on and have me working remotely for them. I've already got a contract signed with a contracting company and have been setup with an umbrella company. So I think all of legalities of continuing to work for my current company back in the US have been satisfied, except for my NI number.

I called the JobCentre today, and the guy sounded confused by my ILE status and the fact that it had an expiration date on the visa, even though my status is not expired (he put me on hold a couple of times for several minutes each time while he conferred with someone). When he came back on the line, I was expecting him to simply send me an application in the mail to fill out and return, but instead the guy set up an interview for me at an Edinburgh office. Is that normal routine?

I plan on bringing with me to the appointment the following:

1) Expired passport with ILE visa, and current passport
2) Scottish Gas letter with my name and address on it.
3) My contract with the contracting company and the umbrella company
4) My current resume/CV
5) My rental/lease agreement

Is there anything else I should bring with me?

TIA!

Here's a thread from December last year:
http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=78116

I had an appointment at a JobCentre (but not a normal one- this one seemed to deal only with National Insurance stuff).  I think I just brought my appointment confirmation, passport, BRP, something with proof of my address and DH's National Insurance Number.  :)  All she did was fill out the form for me.  :P  Seemed like it would have been easier if I had done it- I kept having to spell my name out for her.  :P

I didn't have a job when I applied but I just told them I was looking for work.... they didn't ask for any proof or my CV, but if you've got a contract, you might as well bring it.  :)

It wasn't really anything to worry about- just one more thing to do.  :)  Good luck!  :)

I applied for my National Insurance Number in early March, shortly after receiving my FLR(M).  When I called to inquire about it, I was told that I'd have to apply via an appointment.  Someone theorized that people who have their visas granted from outside the UK don't have to apply in person, and those who have their visas granted inside the UK do have to apply in person.  So, if your ILE was granted outside the UK, I'd say this seems routine.

Having read something TravelingFrog posted about her visit to the JobCentre, I took my husband's NINo in addition to my passport, BRP, and proof of address.  I would add that to your list.

I spent a fair amount of time waiting, and then I sat with a JobCentre employee as they filled out the application for me.  It was rather uneventful.

My NINo arrived in the post one week after my appointment.

Hope it goes smoothly!

I just rang the Jobcentre Plus application line, they sent me a form, I filled it in and returned it with the documentation required and, a couple weeks later, received my NI number. Was probably the easiest 'necessary' of my entire move.

Here's the thread Eloise mentioned.  :)  Another thread about getting a National Insurance number from the past year (March 2013).  :)

Thanks all! I don't know why all of my searches kept bringing up threads from several years ago..must not have been using correct search terms.

Anyways, thanks for all the info. I'll add my hubby's NIN card to the list, although I don't understand why they would need this?

I guess I'm just really concerned they will be confused by the fact that my ILE visa has an expiry date on it and deny me a NIN as the guy on the phone certainly seemed confused. Hopefully the JobCentre office folks will be more familiar with my visa type, than the phone agents.

It's not just you- I think all the searches bring up old threads.

I think they need to link partners together so they notice if they're claiming more benefits than they should.... it doesn't affect your tax rate at all (I don't think)... just benefits (claiming as a couple rather that individually).

If you're worried about confusing them with ILE, you could print off pages on the UKBA website that explain it a bit more.  :)  Then they don't need to just take your word for it.  :)  My guess, though, is that it'll be fine.  :)  Just because you're in the UK on a visa (besides a visitor visa) means you're able to work.  :)

I found the process super easy actually. I called the number on their website and gave all my information over the phone. They sent me a form a few days later to finish filling information in, with a prepaid envelope. I just received my NI Number today in the mail. The whole process took about 3 weeks and I didn't even go into a Jobcenter or interview or anything.  :)

I called the Job Centre the end of September and was told I had to attend an interview to prove my identity.  I got an appointment for 2 weeks later.  I brought my passport and my expired passport, the letter the job centre sent me, and proof of address (our gas bill).  I brought every other piece of identification or paperwork in my name but they didnt want any of it.  They didn't ask for DH's NiNo.

The guy I spoke to on the phone was a bit confused when I called....Are you working? no. Then why do you need a NiNo? So I can give it to an employer when I do start working.  The people at the interview knew a bit more and the actual interview went quickly......after waiting for ages.

Hi there.

Sorry to bring up an old thread but it's on topic and it saves making a new one.

My wife applied for her NI number today, via an interview in stoke. They got us in fairly quickly actually, two days after the call.

However the person who did the interview said it would take three months to process and receive her number. Is this really the case? Does it really take that long to receive? It seems quite a long time.

Thanks,

Ben

My partner applied in mid January (2 week wait for interview, but we are in London) and they told him at least 3 weeks.  Something about how new numbers are only issued once a week in a batch is what causes the delay.  I believe it took closer to 4 weeks though, and we were just about ready to call to check in when it appeared in the mail.

The three months sounds excessive, but I would count on at least a month.

It is correct that if you applied for your BRP (or whatever visa you're on) from inside the UK you need an appointment, but if you applied from outside the UK then you don't need one.  I don't know why.

I called JobCentre and got an appointment for a weeks time.  My appointment was mid-April and she told me it was taking 4 to 5 weeks, which means I should expect mind any day now.

I brought:  the JobCentre letter, my BRP, passport, proof of address, and marriage cert.  The processor checked the documents and filled in the form for me.  She did need my DH's NINo, but I was able to text him and get it -- she didn't need to see it.

I have a friend who applied last week and they told her 6 weeks.  I think it's just a pile up right now.
