On the first page, it asks for the date of intended travel. Well, how do we know till they tell us how long it will take to process?! We'd like to put down mid October but really don't know! Lol!

Just put the earliest date you'd like to travel.  It won't lock you into a travel date, it just gives them an idea.  For instance, I applied with a travel date of 20 Sept. which was the earliest I would considering moving even though I probably won't even move until sometime in October.

How did you find the form? My hubby-to-be has dyslexia so we may have to use Hangouts/Tango/Skype ourselves as it may be overwhelming, and one of the reasons we were considering using a lawyer.

I found the form to be alright but I also do not have dyslexia.  If you can use a screen sharing program then you'll be able to help him.  I printed out the paper version and, while not an exact copy, it did prepare me and allow me to collect all the information before having to enter it.  One section concerning the applicant's employment is not on the paper version.  There are explanations of what information to include on the side of the boxes so use that if you are confused.  Perhaps begin filling it out now so that he can get comfortable with the lay-out before it needs submitted.  I wouldn't think that you would need a lawyer, though.  It's not that complicated, especially if you have looked at the paper version.  Is there a friend that can help your husband with the form in person?  Also remember the the online form is not set in stone and, if there is a mistake on the printed version, it can be corrected before it is sent in.

The date you put on the form is the date that they will make your visa valid from... so you want to put the earliest possible date that you may wish to fly to the UK.

If this date has passed before the visa is issued, they will just make it valid from the date of issue instead.

But you don't want to be in a position where you put, say, a travel date of November 1st, then find it's issued earlier than expected in Sept or Oct and you want fly earlier, but you can't because your visa isn't valid until November 1st and you have to stay in the US for another month before you can travel.

Thanks Beatlemania and ksand24. Very helpful. If he puts down mid October and gets end October, that's not too bad.

Aaaaargh. Just filling in the form online. Putting in my passport info as the sponsor and it expired in July! Do I have to apply for a new one before he can apply for his visa? It won't let him enter the expiry date as it was in the past! Please help!

We had that same problem when we applied.

I don't know if it affects it or not, but we erred on the side of caution and my Brit went and got his renewed with an in person appointment in Peterborough. He got his passport the day of his appointment. He said that if you go that route to make the appointment as soon as possible because you don't know how long it will be until an appointment is available.
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

Oh gawd! An added problem then! My hubby-to-be has now gone to bed (it's 3.22am there!) but I guess I'll have to do this. It shouldn't really matter if my passport isn't valid, as I'm not intending to travel to the US now?!
Thanks for your message, anyway!

Sorry I can't be more helpful with that.

We applied the first time back on the old website. I think it would be helpful if they told you up front that you needed your fiance/spouse/partner's passport info and it it needed to be valid or not.

No, that's fine.... Yes, they should, and also it shouldn't matter if I don't have a current one. Grrr! I'll have to make an appointment at the office in London, as that will be nearer. Just something I don't need right now, but hey ho!

The main information page is here (it's for all family visas):
https://www.gov.uk/join-family-in-uk/overview

You will need to apply online and also print off VAF4a Appendix 2 and fill it out.

The online application is here:
https://www.visa4uk.fco.gov.uk/

Appendix 2 is here (second link down):
https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/application-for-uk-visa-for-family-settlement-form-vaf4a

Also on that page is the VAF4a paper version of the online application (first link), which you can use for reference to help you fill out the online application.

No problem :).

So, you'll need to figure out whether he will be applying for a fiance visa (£885) for him to move to the UK and marry here, then switch to FLR(M) after the wedding (£601 by post or £1,001 in person); or if he will come on a Marriage Visitor Visa (£83) to marry, then return to the US and apply for a spousal visa (£885).
Wish it was all online! Wouldn't that great?! Mind you, they need to see all the documentation I suppose... M

I completely agree. They don't make it easy for anyone, do they? I hope it all goes smoothly for you!

Wish I could shed some light on this but I don't have any children so pretty much skipped that section.  My advice would just be to enter all the information about your children and answer all their questions.  You can always add more information at the end.  Hopefully someone else will be along to answer this in more detail.  Good luck!
