Baby Footprints at hospital?
« on: October 31, 2013, 11:34:56 AM »
As my due date is approaching (Dec 13) I am probably going to be posting more and more questions :)

Do they do the ink footprints in the UK at the hospital? Just want to be sure to have a set to put in the baby book. I suppose we could do it at home somehow if not...

As far as I am aware of no they do not.  I had DS2 in March and they didn't.  He got a little hat and I think a little card they filled in with his time, weight and length.  There is usually a lady that'll come around and do a photo and you might get a bounty pack but that's about all.

You are aware that they want you to bring everything for you and baby with you (ie diapers, wipes, toiletries etc)

Feel free to ask loads of questions as I know I felt like I had no clue what to expect when we had our first here.

No footprints here, or even a little hat! They did come around offering to take a photograph though. I really wish they'd kept the saleslady out of the wards though.

They didn't even measure him, much to the dismay of all my american relatives who wanted to know how long he was.

Wow, different experience here, in scotland. They provided all the maternity towels and wipes and nappies. I don't think they did the foot prints but I can't remember!
Ask away. I enjoyed my experience in the hospital, which was a mega surprise as I had originally planned a homebirth. I'm due in a week, so I'll have up to date experiences to share if you've got any more questions - however, I'm attempting a homebirth again, so cross your fingers for me!

They don't measure length in my area either.  My friend said that she told them she needed to know because they were moving back to the US and the doctors there needed the information.

I've had two babies since moving here.

Sunderland Royal hospital.  No ink footprints, had to do them myself.

They supplied most other things, had to take in clothes/milk etc.

Thanks all! Wow, I did not realize I needed to bring all supplies with me. Does that include the fun giant post-partum pads and bed protectors for me? Do I need to bring any basic pain meds for after (ibuprofen, paracetamol?) Do they give you that numbing spray to help with going to the bathroom relief after?

I have spoken with enough people to give me the heads up that I'll be going home very quickly, so I know I won't need too much there.

I had no idea to ask them to measure her, thanks!

I had my first DD in the US, so this is all very new :)

You should receive a list of what to pack for your hospital visit from whoever runs your antenatal classes.

They have pads and everything like that.  Just clothes and milk they don't have as far as I can remember.

Def ask at your hospital and the midwife to be sure.  Both times here (Durham and Manchester) I had to bring all my own pads and stuff too (not the bed one though).  First was all natural (UK) second induced (US) and third emerg c sect (UK) I think they may have given me all the pain meds but I can't remember for sure.  I was told manchester was one of the only hospitals left that provided formula too so ask if you think you might need it.

Where are you at so that may be helpful if anyone has been there recently.

My natural birth they didn't have me change into a gown or anything I was told to wear an old tshirt , also pack some snacks and stuff as they only do really basic meals.

Yes, my area doesn't provide a gown, the pads (but not the bed pads), no diapers, no formula, and apparently limited food so you need to bring snacks both for during and after the labour if you need to stay.

They have pain meds in my area, but no mention of any spray.

Just as an fyi - they don't automatically do it in the US either. I totally forgot to ask them to do it in the baby book and I figured we'd get a copy of the ones they do for the hospital records, but we didn't. I have to remember for the next time!

Second the no spray here too.  Don't think I've ever even heard of other moms mentioning it - they don't know what they are missing out on!!!

Sadly, neither hospital we visited offered footprints.. Each hospital isvery different with what they offer though.
If you haven't already.. Get the number from your midwife to call and book a tour of where you plan on giving birth. The two places we were looking at did wonderful tours. They were very different in what they did/what they offered. A great amount of information with doing that.. They answer all your questions and really put you at ease with everything!

Also, Congrats!! Hope everything goes smoothly for you!
