So lost without my pies and Mac and cheese
« on: November 07, 2013, 04:56:42 PM »
I am a lover of velveeta shells and cheese.  Didn't buy any to bring with me on the move.  Is there an equivalent? Or does anyone have a recipe for it with UK cheeses?

Also, my pie pan was pretty old and I chose to leave it behind figuring I could just buy one here.  No luck.  I can't even find premade pie crusts or throw away tin foil pie pans.  Am I just not looking in the right places??

Thanks for any help.

You should be able to find both at an American food store (online if not near a big city) but it will be expensive.

Tesco sells Kraft Mac and Cheese...  Not the same I know...

It's not even the same as Kraft Mac and Cheese from the USA!

Can't help you with Velveeta in the stores but you can buy it here online: http://www.americansweets.co.uk/american-velveeta-cheese-block-8oz-pack-3484-p.asp

As to a pie plates, here's a link to disposable aluminium ones at Robert Dyas: http://www.robertdyas.co.uk/P~152664~Essential-Pie-Plates and you should also find these in the homewares section of larger supermarkets.

Tesco stock these pie tins: http://www.tesco.com/direct/search-results/results.page?catId=4294967294&searchquery=pyrex+pie+plate&SrchId=4294967294&_requestid=717676

Happy eating:)

Thank you thank you fruitgum +1!!  I don't mind using the disposable ones so I will order them for now.  The huge tesco by me didn't have those pans so I may order one of those as well.  Too bad the velveeta is out of stock, but will keep an eye on that.

KF and Shandy have never seen the kraft at Tesco.  Not that I am a big fan.  I have tried every mac and cheese at tesco and asda and they are all gross :(  Gonna try to make my own if they restock the velveeta on that site soon.

I have never found a good proper American pie plate here (i.e. deep enough, wide enough). They're all too small.    I've used tart pans to make open face pies though and that works well.

I gave up and bought a nice US pie plate iduring a visit once.

That said, Lakeland may have something you're looking for?

Farmfoods do Kraft Mac and Cheese for £1, or 2 for £1 depending on offers.  It doesn't taste the same though.

Can you tell I've never tried it?  I was never a Mac and cheese fan.  Homemade, sure.  Box stuff, meh.

Skyco has velveeta shells.  Not a bad price either.

For the pie pan, have a look around those family-owned shops that sell everything. Not sure if there's a proper name for those shops, but they usually sell plates, pans, cleaning supplies, coat hangers, mouse traps etc.

Anyway, I found a Pyrex pie pan in one. It's the right diameter, but maybe a tiny bit less deep than I would like. It's worked out pretty well for me. Good luck!

Thanks guys!!  I do make my own mac and cheese, but always used the velveeta in a block.  Still working my way through the cheeses here to find out what I like and what I don't.

Phat....I did see the tart pans, and may get one for my chocolate pie and my pear custard pie as they are both open face, well i put a few strips of pie crust on the pear pie, otherwise the custard stays runny for some reason.  Thankfully I was able to find a cheesecake pan and a bundt pan.....both for £2.50.  So am happy about that, but been craving my pear pie the last couple days.

Thanks again for all your help.

Have you ever thought of making homemade 'velveeta'? I haven't made any yet, but the recipe looks easy enough.

I found a pie pan at TK Maxx.  They also have American foods sometimes, but can't say I've ever seen mac&cheese there.

I second TK Maxx ... I found a really nice pie dish there when I found myself in need of one because I lent my deep dish American one to a friend.
Let them eat cupcakes!
