Salary paid out monthly?
« on: December 31, 2013, 02:46:22 AM »
Is it common for a company to pay out salary in one monthly payment in the UK? In the US we're more used to every two weeks or weekly. I've never experienced monthly before. Not a big deal, just curious. I don't think there would be any implications other than making sure that you're good with expenses until the next pay period, since taxes etcetera would still work the same. Am I missing something?

I think it depends on the company and/or your personal preferences. Since moving to the UK, I've been paid weekly, biweekly, and monthly.  If monthly paychecks aren't going to work for you, perhaps check with payroll to see if it's possible to be done more often?

I was paid monthly.

Me too.  I was used to it though because my US jobs always paid monthly too.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

I've been working in the UK for 15 years and I've always been paid monthly.

As far as I'm aware, monthly paycheques are the norm in most UK companies - everyone I know is paid monthly as well.

The only time I wasn't, and was paid weekly, was when I was only a temporary staff member in retail and had a fixed contract for a certain number of weeks of work (short-term summer and Christmas jobs), but as soon as I went to a permanent staff member at that company, my paycheques became monthly.

When I lived in the US, I actually found it really odd that people were paid weekly or bi-weekly, and not monthly.

I was always paid monthly in the US, and have always been paid monthly here... apart from when I was working for a temp agency, which was weekly pay.

Wow this is a very active forum!  :) Thanks for the info. Monthly will be a change for me but I'm sure I'll get used to it.

Monthly is the norm in the UK, unless you work in a weekly paid job but those are usually casual jobs or manual labour

The only issue is when you first start because you are paid in arrears so may have to wait a month or even more to be paid.

I started my job on Dec 16th, due to Xmas they were getting paid on the 20th and we were too late to be set up so I have to wait until Jan 27th to get paid, the back pay will be nice though!

You just learn to budget, get your direct debits set up for a couple of days after your salary hits your bank account.

OMG! You started work on Dec 16 and didn't get paid until Jan 27?  Wow that would take some getting used to.  Of course you has a special circumstance, but I think getting paid monthly is something I will have to deal with once I move.  I'm so used to getting paid bi-weekly

I actually prefer getting paid monthly because I found when I got weekly paycheques, I would just spend the money really easily, rather than budget for anything.

Each week, it was 'ooh, payday, now I can spend lots of money', so I would just spend it on silly things, but with a monthly paycheque I only get that 'payday' feeling once a month and the rest of the month I'm careful with my money.

I agree that the monthly paycheck is quite nice.

I thought it would be a difficult adjustment but it makes things so much easier in many ways.

I get paid on the 25th of the month.  On the 1st all of my bills go out of my account via direct debit.  So the money goes in and then it goes out.  I'm left with my fun money for the month and know exactly what I can spend.   ;D

I can't be the only person who finds getting paid monthly hard going?

Especially when 1.) Paid early for Christmas - it's so long until January pay.  2.) When it's Tax Disc, MOT, or Car Insurance month 3.) Just back from a holiday

I am used to it, but that doesn't mean I like it!
