Travelling with a newborn
« on: January 12, 2014, 01:47:47 PM »
Hi,

Got a question, plan to travel once I got my baby passports, after she's born.  Though do they allow 2 month old to get US/UK passports, would it be too early?
.

They allow you to get a passport (UK and US) as soon as you have the birth certificate.  I don't think there are any regulations on old a baby has to be to travel.  Recommendations...yes.  I traveled with my 7 week old baby and had no problems, although the GP was a little worried because she wouldn't have all her vaccinations.  It will take some organization on your part to get all your ducks in a row to travel so soon after the birth, but it can be done.

Got another question, I know I had seen it on this site before but I can't find it.

Here's my situation...

Planning to travel sometime in April but baby not born yet.
So by the time baby is born, I think I can get a UK passport faster then the US passport.  In this case, would baby not be allow to enter US with just using UK passport.  I read some where on this site that they will question or give me a hard time but what else should I expect or what was your experience like if you done it before?.  Though I know best to get US passport as well but I'm really not sure how long it would take as I have to travel in April and not any later.

Thanks
=)

You MUST get the baby's US passport before leaving the UK as it is illegal for a US citizen to enter the US on a foreign passport (the US 'does not recognise dual citizenship and will only view the baby as a US citizen... so you will need the US passport.

You can book an appt at the US embassy before the baby is born.  Just do it for like 2-3 weeks after your due date, just in case you are late.  You can just put the name as "Baby" LastName when booking.

How long would you think it usually take to get a appointment at the US London embassy?  If I were to book it a week or two after due date, what happens if I can't make it?  I just cancel and rebook?

How fast can I get the US passport, the last time it took me about two months because I had to proof that I been in US for a length of time.  But normally if their OK with everything on the date of appointment, how long it took you?

Just want to get an idea.
Got lot's going on in my head, feels short on time.

Thanks  ;)

Lots of information to answer your questions in the sticky at the top called "Consular Thingie Birth Abroad". We just went through the process and it took 2.5weeks from our appointment in London to receive our passport/papers in the mail.

An expat friend of mine has done it twice - gone home fairly soon after the baby was born, using a UK passport. Both times she explained that she hadn't had time to get the American passport before travel. Both times she was told that she needed to get the baby a US passport before the next trip but she didn't have any problems. The most recent baby was born in April of this year and her trip home was in June.

With Little Man #1, I only had enough time to get UK passport before we travelled to the US.  NOT IDEAL!!!! But, I had to travel as grandfather ill, and couldn't travel without 8 week old little man.  I didn't have a hard time at US Immigration, but again, this is not ideal.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
