Best way to mail passport?
« on: January 20, 2014, 09:51:07 AM »
Hi everyone,

I'm applying for my provisional license and need to mail in my passport. What's the best way to do this? Is sending via Royal Mail "safe"? I can obviously send registered, etc, just looking for advice on best service to use.

Thanks!

Royal Mail is fine for in-country mailing.  I would ensure you pay for a trackable service.

Thanks....Have heard so many horror stories about Royal Mail, but wasn't sure if it was int'l vs. domestic.

I'm honestly not looking forward to getting my UK driver's license, but it must be done!

Thanks

Royal Mail is fine for posting domestic within the UK.

The problem comes when you try to send important documents internationally, especially things like passports or immigration-related documents, because they can get caught up in customs on the way, and are sometimes delayed for weeks, or even don't arrive at all.

So, when sending domestic post, you can use Royal Mail, and if you'd prefer, pay for the service that tracks and records the delivery.

But when mailing internationally, I would use a courier like FedEX or UPS for important documents, as they have their own customs and so there's no worry about the mail getting delayed or lost in the government postal system.

This is anecdotal evidence only, so take it as you find it.  Royal Mail lost my passport when I sent it for a provisional license. I sent it with tracking, but not insurance.  When I went to the Embassy to replace it, I was told that they had seen lots of passports go missing when sent to the DVLA.  Make sure you insure it for the full value of replacing your visa stamps as well as replacing the passport.
