Newbie
« on: February 13, 2014, 05:32:29 PM »
Hi everyone,
Wanted to introduce myself as I've lurked on this board for almost 3 years now and since we are finally starting the moving process I wants to say hi! I'm british and husband is American. We met working at Walt Disney World 5 years ago. Got married in 2011 and had our first baby, a daughter, on Christmas Day 2013! We've been planning on moving since 2012 but have taken our time planning everything. We have booked to sail on the Queen Mary 2 at the end of September. We have two dogs who wouldn't fly very well so we forked out the extra to (hopefully) make them more comfortable. We will be moving back to Sheffield to my parents until my husband, an accountant, finds a job in Central London, or is able to transfer with Lockheed Martin where he works now. We are super excited but very anxious to get the visa process going. My husband does have one felony on his criminal record. We have a pretty deep understanding of how the UK laws could take this and don't think we should have many problems. However our whole future is Resting on us moving, we are both unhappy in Florida and want badly to be near my family. So we are looking into a good immigration lawyer. If anybody had used one and has any recommendations I would really appreciate it!
Can't wait to make our move home and show my husband the British way of life!

Welcome to the forum. Do you have adequate savings to meet the financial requirements of the spousal visa for your husband?

Hi there,
Yes we are very fortunate to have it as cash savings in the bank for almost 2 years now. We saw the dramatic changes in 2012 and prepared then for it. I am hoping that it is relaxed a bit when it is reviewed next month, for the benefit of many Brits I know here in Florida wanting to move their spouses back! I know it's tough for a lot of people to meet and find it unfair it is made so hard for so many good people.

That's wonderful.  Then hopefully you will be able to find someone to assist with the felony conviction.

Out of curiosity, where in FL are you from? I'm from FL myself. Originally the Tampa area but lived in the Tallahassee area for years as well.

Welcome to the forum. Good luck with everything. Hope it works out well for your family!

We live in Orlando, behind Disney on the west of the city. Husband works in Lakeland so makes for an easier drive to skip the crazy tourist traffic! Looking forward to leaving that behind for sure!

Welcome aboard! I grew up and lived most of my life with the crazy (to us) summer traffic and tourists of Holiday World, which is nothing compared to the year around absolute insanity of Disney. I have no idea how the locals would cope.

Good to hear you are both planning your escape to where you want to be. :)

My parents retired to Florida and are about an hour and a half from Orlando.  They are originally from Chicago and discuss how while they love their home, the Florida natives drive them bonkers.

I am an American starting to look at PhD programs in England, specifically Bath Spa University.  I have never been to England, so I obviously want to visit first.  The reason I am not on this site is to learn more about life in the UK.

The thing is, Yankees move down and then don't integrate, you know learn the language and customs. First thing you know there's a bagel shop opening up nearby....

I will say though that I have never subscribed to the plural possessive form of "Ya'll" as in, "The police say we have to move all ya'llses' cars off the median".

Welcome to the forum! I wish you the best of luck with the visas, moving your dogs, etc.!

Another Floridian here, I was born and raised in Melbourne, Florida, which is about an hour east of Orlando on the coast. And my husband is from Sheffield! As the Disney ride says, "It's a small world after all!"  :)

Thought it was all ya'll's instead of ya'llses?

"Ya'll" fascinates me. I never heard "ya'llses" until Jeff Foxworthy. And according to the late Lewis Grizzard, "ya'll" has been known to be used in the singular, as in when addressing uncle Joe, "Ya'll don't be such a stranger from now on." He felt this was a terrible misuse.

But lately I have been considering these nonstandard kind of things along the lines of a thread from these boards about "sat" being used in a situation like, "Larry was sat on the train reading the Telegraph". These things impart a different meaning than standard English, a shortened nuance. "Ya'll" is not "you guys".
