Where the HELL is my NIN???
« on: November 01, 2004, 12:26:28 AM »
 >:( This is just "taking the piss" as the british say it!!! I applied for my NIN back in the early to middle part of September, due to starting my job and NEEDING IT!! They said it would be 4-6 weeks, and I still haven't seen it yet!!!!!
Now I know I know these things take time, but FFS!!! There are some people that have arrived over here in the UK AFTER me and started working AFTER me who have theirs already?
(Getting overly huffy now) Who the heck am I supposed to call?
I know this isn't really much to get upset about, but until I get that number, my taxes are over half my earnings!!! They can't allot me into the proper tax bracket until they have my NIN number, and I'm getting just a tad miffed as the holidays near and my return to the states to see my daughter and family get closer.....I'm paying taxes instead of saving for my plane fare!!! (and strangely enough I heard somewhere that the company should be able to make the adjustments without the NIN, but personnel just isn't budging when I talk to them!!!)
HHEEEELLLLPPPP!!!!!!
"blush" wow now that was uhm.....heh.....  :o

Call the Benefits Agency.  There is a number they can give you for complaints if you feel things haven't gone right.  I'm sorry I don't have it still...it was three, almost four years ago that I had to call it becasue I couldn't get them to give me an appointment.  If you call them and ask them for the number for complaints they'll give it to you though.

Don't get too excited about your new tax bracket though....it'll still be painful!   :-\\\\

I agree with Wishstar, call the benefits agency. You will also want to call the Inland Revenue folks so that you can get a refund on any tax you have over paid. When I first started working, they had charged me so much, but when I got my refund check, it was over £2,000. That was enough for a niec tidy trip to the US, and then some.

Good Luck, Honey.

What is the Tax bracket?  I am thinking of getting a part time job and now very curious to see if it worth the effort.  There is so much tax here, it is crazy!!!  Thanks for any help.

On another note, Aacchhoo, I hope you get your NIN soon.

Well Aimiloo, I feel your pain.  I just received today a letter for my evidence of identity interview.  I applied 3 months ago!  Well, maybe that is a sign that I will find a job soon.  Anyway,  I hope everything works out for you.  Congrats on the new job by the way.  Got any extra job karma to send my way?

Really depends on where you live.  I had to wait about two weeks for the number and maybe 5 weeks for the card.  I've heard others having to wait nearly three months---I guess it depends on how busy your local office is!

Do you have to have a NIN number before applying for a job or can you use a temporary number???

but when i get the number, i can let my employer know and they can apply it then, right?

they issue you a temp number and take out a ton of tax (which you can file to get back) until you have a perm one.

You can apply for jobs without one, though opinion differs as to whether or not it affects your chances of getting a job.  Also, you're legally allowed to apply for one as long as you're actively looking for work, though, again, it seems to be up to the individual office in your area as to whether or not you'll get an appointment.

I was quite happily suprised how fast I got my number - I interviewed for it the week I started work (first week in September) and I had the number about five weeks later - in time for it to be used for my second pay cheque. I got my card the first or second week in October. But I think this area must be faster than most - I didn't have any trouble getting an interview appt. either (though I did notice the non-picking-up-of-phone thing, Aimiloo!)
