How to enter non-resident alien spouse on online FBAR
« on: May 02, 2014, 01:50:37 PM »
Can anyone tell me how to enter a non-resident aline spouse (with whom one holds joint accounts) on an online FBAR. Have always previously entered '"NRA" where it asked for identification number but I gather the online form will not now accept NRA.

Have you looked at the on-line form? You fill it out as the USC/account owner. Your spouse is not required to file as a NRA, and it does not ask for an ITIN/SSN for the 'joint owner'.

It's a bit different from prior years. You list your details including SSN as the 'principal joint owner' for joint accounts, and only yourself as the owner of any account in your name only. If your spouse has accounts that have no signature authority or joint interest, those accounts are not listed.

Married December 1992 (my 'old flame' whom I first met in the mid-70s)
1st move to UK - 1993 (Letter of Consent granted at British Embassy in Washington DC)
ILR - 1994 (1 year later - no fee way back then!)
Back to US in 2000
Returned to UK July 2011 (Spousal Visa/KOL endorsement)
ILR - September 2011
Application for naturalization submitted July 2014
Approval received 15-10-14; ceremony scheduled for 10 November!
Passport arrived 25 November 2014. Finally done!

I was wondering the same as the original poster as my wife is a NRA. I interpret the above as saying that I can use my details for our joint account under the account details and also put myself as the principal joint owner. Is this correct?

Many thanks
