MIL visiting US. Best temporary medical insurance?
« on: July 03, 2014, 07:35:52 PM »
I want my MIL to pay us a long visit, but the high cost of temporary medical insurance is very prohibitive. Does anyone know if there is an ACA option for her?  I don't even know where to start. She has some ongoing care needs because she had breast cancer and a mastectomy, and also a back surgery. She is healthy and capable, but cannot travel without medical coverage because of her issues.  We'd love to have her most of next summer.
TIA
Wren

I know some travel insurance policies also cover medical expenses. Might be something to look into.

I know some travel insurance policies also cover medical expenses. Might be something to look into.

All travel insurance should cover medical expenses, especially travel insurance for the US where it's vital that you have medical... as a result, travel insurance for the US is usually a bit more expensive than travel insurance for going anywhere else in the world because it covers medical too (usually you have the options: 'Europe', 'Worldwide' and 'Worldwide excluding USA and Canada'). Ideally you want insurance that covers up to £10 million in medical expenses, which policies for the US usually do.

She will have to make sure that she is covered by the insurance, as what she can take out it may depend on her age and any pre-existing conditions.

So, I would look into travel insurance that is specifically designed for people over 65 (assuming she is over 65) - like Saga or Age UK - as some policies will only cover 18-64 years.

You should also check how long they will allow a single trip policy for - I think some companies specify that the trip is no longer than 45 days.

Thank you! That's so helpful.  If she isn't 65 she's near it. I honestly don't know. I know she turned 60 after I had kids. Other than that I have no clue, lol. I guess it matters. In the past she has gotten it through her travel insurance, but it was very expensive, she said. I was just wondering if there was another way. I'd take 45 days. Six weeks is better than 2 or 3... I have a feeling by next summer I'm gonna need her help. She was an RAF wife, so she gets moving with small kids internationally, and she will be able to help me make decisions on purge/keep. I just want to have some info so we can start planning her visit when we go over at Christmas.

I've used AllClear for my medical coverage when visiting the US.  My MIL uses them as well, and both of us have a sizeable amount of medical issues.  I don't know what budget you have in mind, but they were the most affordable considering that they covered all my pre-existing conditions.

MIL gets travel insurance every year before coming to the States. Hers covers medical and is generally around 35 pounds. (I don't have a pound sign on my keyboard and forgot the shortcut.)  She is 63 and has a few pre-existing conditions.
