Insurance -- Does this seem right?
« on: August 21, 2014, 11:44:58 AM »
We just moved from DC to Cambridge (Newmarket) at the end of July.  I've been lurking here for a couple of months getting information about car insurance and the process and, from what I've read, was expecting to either have a really hard time finding someone who would insure us or to pay several thousand pounds for coverage, or both.

However, I just talked to Direct Line, gave them our information, and they came back with a price of just 560 pounds per year for husband and I.  Does this seem right?? It was super easy, and this is SO much cheaper than what we were expecting (especially since I had to say yes to an accident within the last 2 years) -- I'm worried that maybe I've somehow done this wrong?

That's for a 2013 Hyundai i10. We'll both be on international driver's licenses until we switch over.

(totally unrelated, but my computer keyboard is labelled with the pound symbol, but spits out the # symbol.. weird)

When I first arrived I was given a reasonable quote like you.  I bought the car and had it insured.  A couple of weeks later I received an amendment in the mail and they wanted nearly 3 times as much!

I  called and they said they would not accept my no claims from the US.  I got really upset explaining that I had specifically asked that question when I called for the quote, was put on hold, and then told they would accept it.

Fortunately they had a recording of the call (tied to the quote number).  They verified what I said was true and honoured the original quote.  I had to fight hard and it wasn't nice but I won.

Your quote seems correct to me.  I just got my first car over here and found insurance for £486 per year.  It's correct that they don't take your no claims from the US into account.

Not a bad quote at all, where you live may be keeping the cost down.

Direct Line gave me a good quote when I was staying in N. Devon, but when I moved permanently to Surrey they couldn't compete. We were with Toyota insurance for one year, and once we had one year's NCD it was possible to get much lower quotes from a comparison website.

Thanks for the responses.. Relieved to hear it's in line with some others' experiences.

KFDancer - that sounds so frustrating.  I will make sure and keep notes on all my conversations with them in case something like that happens.

There is an underlying thing here though. An insurance company, like a bank, is supposed to be a trusted partner - you rely on them to be stable and honest - it is the basis of the business.  First thing, before you are out of the gate, they try crap like this.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC
