Am I eligible for healthcare for cancer treatment?
« on: August 27, 2014, 06:34:12 PM »
Well this is a sort of depressing first post,

I'm new to the forum. I've looked on here occasionally before, especially about a year ago when Zach, my husband, and I began looking into moving to the UK. I'm a US citizen and he's a British citizen; met 8 years ago, been married for 6. I haven't lived in the US for about a decade, and he hasn't lived in the UK for 7 years, but we started talking about settling down there and he was offered a better job in the UK so we decided to go ahead and move forward with that.

Zach has been in the UK working now for five months; I wanted to stay here and finish the job I was on before leaving to join him. I went through the hassle of doing all the paperwork, sent it in, got my spousal visa approved etc. I was planning on being in the UK back with my husband (finally) ASAP..

And then, I was given the news a few days ago that I have breast cancer. I've really been rattled by this. I didn't have the intention of moving to the UK for healthcare, I'm not the type of person to be a leech on the system purposefully. But we're in the process of buying a home, I've already put in my notice at work, etc. so there isn't really any turning back. And my visa was already approved, I don't want to not go, I miss my husband too much for that. But will I be allowed to get treatment through NHS when I do arrive in the UK? I know I'm allowed to get GP care but will more advanced care fall under that? I'm petrified of being accused of only coming to the UK for healthcare and being denied care or thrown out or something..any help is appreciated.

I am sorry to hear of your news, it must be very hard for you to deal with on top of an international move.

Your visa type means that you are eligible for NHS healthcare, it is not restricted to visiting a GP. You will register with and visit a GP before being referred to a specialist, and bringing any relevant medical information with you would help your healthcare providers.
