Holidays during term time?

Hi all

We are hoping to go back to the US on holiday next year and part of the reason is to check out schools and neighborhoods that we are looking to move to in a few yrs. Has anyone been granted exceptional circumstances from their Head for this reason and therefore not had to pay the fines?
