I've never been to St. Neots, but a quick look at Wiki tells me it has a population of 40,000. That's hardly a village... more like a small city (though it's classed as a town)

A village is usually just a collection of a few houses, perhaps a shop if you're lucky, maybe with a post office inside it too. There's probably a church and maybe a school if there are enough kids for one although often there will just be one school shared by a few different villages. I guess most villages would only have maybe 100-200 people living in them.
I grew up in a fairly large town of 15,000 people, 15 miles from a good-sized city (450,000 people)... When I drive the 30 minutes from my town into the city, I pass through about 8 villages on the way
