A Washingtonian in Basingstoke
« on: January 02, 2015, 02:20:37 PM »
Hello, all!

My name is Stevie and I'm a born and raised Washingtonian trying to make it in England. My husband and I met, dated, and did the long distance thing for over four years before getting our marriage visa in June. I've been in the UK since July, trying to figure it all out but honestly, I miss Americans and I could use somebody's advice. Things have been difficult, particularly with finding a job and making friends. Sometimes, when walking around in Basingstoke, I feel like I'm on another planet. So much to remember and understand and figure out!

Ummm, in terms of what I can offer the forum, I guess a friendly face? I love making friends and talking to people. I definitely don't mind listening, if you need a friend. I'm not sure, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of things around here. :)

Hello Stevie!

I'm new here too (VERY new actually) and I am afraid I am not actually American, but I do live here, or there, depending on where you're looking at it.

You're probably thinking that's no good to you right now but  I know you're surrounded by us and I know it is quite a daunting challenge to figure out things like slang terms and cars driving on the left and why all the shops shut at 5pm and are never open on a Sunday and why there are two blokes named  'Ant' and 'Dec' on telly all the time.

You shall find a job and as for making friends then you'll have no trouble in that respect. Despite the stereotype we are actually quite a friendly bunch and you'll have no trouble fitting in. In fact, you are probably being inundated with questions about America every time someone hears your accent, which I find hasn't really happened over here as my accent is quite mild and they might not pick it up.

Anyway, I've rambled on long enough! Sorry!  :-X

Meant to add that Whitchurch is very close - I think 10 or 15mins from Basingstoke.

Hi Stevie,

I feel the same way you do! I had no idea it would be so different here.  My husband, daughter and I moved to Camberley in July and I am still trying to figure things out.  Where at in Washington are you from?  I grew up in Silverdale but also lived in Richland for a long time.

Hello! I can totally relate. Husband (UKC) and I (USC) did the long distance, etc. We lived in Germany together until summer last year, when we moved to the UK. I live just outside Basingstoke and work in Camberley and would love to meet other Americans! Let me know if you'd like to exchange details and meet for a coffee sometime.

Jess

Hi, Stevie!  I'm from the eastcoast USA and live not too far from you, in Reading. :)  My husband's job is in Basingstoke. If you want to hit me up with a private message, I can give you my email address. I've been living here for 7 years. :)  I also miss the USA!  But two things I do not miss are the severe weather temps and the crime. I feel much safer here in England.  And, believe it or not, I love English weather!
