E-file taxes, which program?
« on: February 15, 2015, 02:20:48 PM »
Hi all

This is the first year I'm filing my taxes claiming exclusion so I'll be filing the 2555 form (last tax year I was in the UK for only part of the year, 2013). Last year I used TaxAct to file and had no troubles with it. I'd read on the forums that this was a good site because it allowed you to select NRA for your spouse which helped a lot to file MFS. This year I plan to file my 1040 along with a 2555, I was hoping to use the EZ form because I have no dependents. Also I need to file a schedule B as I earned interest in a US bank account (only 82 cents!).

I've been working on my taxes this weekend and TaxAct is making a huge mess for me - they changed some of the interface I think and for some reason it's trying to file all these blank forms for me (including estimated tax sheets, underpayment of estimated tax, 1st time homebuyer credit, and instead of schedule b it's doing a 1099-int?) even though I indicated no for all these things. My tax situation is pretty straight forward and this has caused a huge headache for me.

Are there any other programs to e-file us taxes that are useful to expats? Thanks for your help

You probably need Schedule B anyway to declare the existence of foreign bank accounts. Sounds like you should complete paper forms and mail these to the IRS.

Hi guya

I definitely think I'm going to have to mail them. Spent too much time trying to make the e-file work and it's driving me nuts. I'll have to print them out at some point this week when I have access to a printer. Just so I have my head on straight does this sound right for the forms I'll need to print out:

-1040
-Schedule B (us bank account interest, my uk bank account does not gain interest and i'm below threshold of reporting so no FBAR needed either)
-2555 EZ
-8965 (ACA exempt)

Thanks for your help

I like FreeTaxUSA. Federal filing is free.

If you are filing as MFS and claiming an exemption for your spouse, it's no longer sufficient to put NRA in the line for the SSN. You need to get an ITIN for your spouse. See: http://www.irs.gov/Individuals/International-Taxpayers/U.S.-Citizens-and-Resident-Aliens-Abroad---Nonresident-Alien-Spouse (scroll almost down to the bottom)/

If not claiming the exemption (and you are entitled to do so if your NRA spouse has no US-source taxable income) it's a moot point. In this case, as I understand it, you can write NRA in the appropriate box, but cannot e-file. Note - that may have changed for the 2014 tax year.
