UK insurance on US license?
« on: May 15, 2015, 08:37:12 AM »
Hi. Can someone please tell me how I might get insurance in the UK for driving/car while I am still using my US license? I had wanted to get my UK license first to make it less confusing but that may not be an option for long. I do not have a car, but would be using my husband's car or one provided for work use (if I get a job I am applying for). Any advice is greatly appreciated!

The first thing you could do is phone your husband's insurer to ask them if they can add you to the policy.

A few years ago I was temporarily added to both my father and my brothers' policies when in the UK for an extended period. Their insurer, LV, had no problem with the US license.

We're looking into the same thing and Post Office Insurance will insure you on a US license, and will even take into account safe driving discounts from your previous insurance (with a valid letter of course).

Hi,

As per above, you'll need to ask specific insurers and/or their agents/brokers that you have a US licence. There'll be many insurance companies who won't insure you, but there are quite a number who will.

The actual quote will also depend heavily on the type of car you wish to get insurance on, your postcode etc. When a driver with a non UK full licence applies for insurance, the price is loaded higher due to the greater risk seen by the insurance companies. Bottom line is you'll need to shop around quite a bit to see if you can get an acceptable premium based on all the above.
