New UK Citizen / Student Loan
« on: June 08, 2015, 01:14:42 PM »
Hi Everyone -- not sure if this is the right place for the question, but it seemed like the best option.

I currently have ILR with the option of applying for full citizenship during September/October this year. I have a Bachelor degree in Advertising & Communication Studies, which I acquired in the USA and was funded by me through US government and private loans.

With that said, here's my question: once I become an official UK citizen, will I be eligible for loans and bursaries for studying to become a teacher?

The difficulty I'm having with finding an answer is that I can't seem to find a definitive answer about whether I'm ineligible because I already have a degree, albeit from the US and privately funded. I can't discern whether I couldn't use these loans and bursary offerings twice if I'm a UK resident or if I can't use them at all if I already have a degree -- even though I'd have never used them before and never had the opportunity to take advantage of them in the first place.

Does anyone have an idea?

I think the difficulty in answering your question does not lie with whether you meet residency and citizenship requirements, but more with what kind of teaching you want to do and how and if your current degree holds any weight.

Normally, you have to have an undergraduate degree in the subject you want to teach and then do a Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) for primary / secondary education. Some universities do undergraduate degrees for primary level.

Where do you live in the UK and what kind of teaching do you want to do (e.g. age group)?

I live in Lincoln and want to become a primary school teacher.

Does that help in clarifying my situation a bit?

I think one of the requirements for those wanting to make a career switch is that they will have worked in their degree field for at least three years.

Just not sure what type of funding will be available to me. If there isn't very much, I probably won't be able to pursue teaching any further for the next several years -- which would be a shame...

There are several ways into teaching - you have identified School's Direct. This is being touted as a replacement for University centred training for teaching. There are two School's Direct plans: salaried and unsalaried. There is  also Assessment Only, and PGCE (which is what I would recommend as you get the most actual training). It looks like you have a fair amount of research to do as to what will be most suitable to your situation. I suggest you start at the DfE website (above)
2004-2008: Student Visa
2008-2010: Tier 1 PSW
2010-2011: Tier 4
2011-2014: Tier 2
2013-2016: New Tier 2 (changed jobs)
16/12/15: SET (LR) successful! - It's been a long road...
12/05/16: Citizenship ceremony!

I live in Lincoln and want to become a primary school teacher.

Does that help in clarifying my situation a bit?

Bishop Grosseteste University in Lincoln has a BA (Hons) Primary Education with QTS (Qualified Teacher Status)
http://www.bishopg.ac.uk/study/ug/primed/Pages/default.aspx
http://www.bishopg.ac.uk/study/courses/Pages/primedqts.aspx

Contact the department direct to discuss entry requirements as a mature student (which I am assuming you are). Ask admissions direct whether local college access teaching courses fulfill the entry requirements. For example, see Lincoln College Access to Higher Education Teacher Training:
http://www.lincolncollege.ac.uk/courses/access-higher-education-teacher-training-pathway

Lincoln College International Students page
http://www.lincolncollege.ac.uk/school-musical-instrument-crafts/international-applicants
You could contact them to see how you get formal clarification of your fee status.

For funding for primary school teaching, see:
https://getintoteaching.education.gov.uk/explore-my-options/primary/funding

How long have you been resident in the UK by the start of the course (e.g. September) if you are doing an access course? How long have you held ILR?
