FBAR questions and confusion
« on: June 15, 2015, 11:01:07 AM »
Hello all, I have recently arrived in the UK on a fiance visa.  I first came to the UK as a student in 2011 (and again in 2013).  In September 2011 opened a bank account for my US student loan disbursements.  I did not know until recently about FBAR, so I suppose I need to go back and see if at any point I had over $10,000 in my account from my student loan disbursements, then file delinquently if this is the case?

Also, I'm confused about the timeline.  Since the filing deadline is June 30, is it $10,000 at any point between June-June, or January-December?

For the record I have had no income in recent years to file.

Trying not to panic and avoid any fines!

It is $10k at any point during the calendar year. So the report due by June 30 2015 is for 2014.

I wouldn't worry too much about late filing for prior years, simply give the reason that you didn't know as this is new to you.

So if I had $10k for a day or two this year, I file that by next June 30, 2016?

I'm having trouble going back in my bank statements to find out if I ever reached the 10k threshold in the past few years.  I'm trying my best though.

EDIT: As far as I can tell, I never reached the $10k threshold in previous years, though I cam awfully close last year.  How is the exchange rate determined?  Depending, I may or may not have crossed it one day last year.

You use the Treasury Reporting rates of Exchange for December 31:

Thanks for that, seems I *just* missed the threshold.  With a Dec. 2014 rate of .6420 Pound to dollar, the most I had in my accounts at once in 2014 was 6300.

Now I know to keep an eye out and will submit my FBAR as necessary.  Phew. Panic averted.
