Car Insurance - Advice Wanted
« on: June 26, 2015, 09:59:30 PM »
Hi Guys,

British Husband posting here on Yankee wife's account, as I am looking for a bit of advice driving related...

So my wonderful wife has been living here for over 2 months now and has been having driving lessons and is doing great, she has applied for her UK provisional driving license and it is in the process of being returned, and I have bought her a car.  I am aware that she can drive here for a year on her American License, but we are both keen for her to get her UK license under her belt as quickly as possible, and the lessons have been great for her getting used to the manual gearbox, the road layouts and driving culture.

I have now come to the point where I am looking to get her insurance on her car, but I just thought I was ask people for pointers to do this in as economical a way as possible (as obviously it has been a rather expensive year with the wedding, getting a house and everything else).

I typically do my insurance through the big car insurance web site, is this the most suitable way to do things for her or are there particular companies that are better for ex-pats? Would it be better I insure the car under my name and have her as a named driver?

Any help or advice based on your experiences would be very gratefully received.

Many Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve,
Hope this isn't too late, not been on in a while, but if your wife is with AAA she can insure her UK car through her US insurer.
They have an office in london and are registered with the UK insurance board...or something like that.
Anyway, my wife has continued her US insurance for the past 7 years in the UK. It works out cheaper, and there isn't any issue renewing the tax online either.
Hope that helps.

Geoff

I have also just seen your post. My father used to add me to his car insurance when I visited from the US, his insurer LV (Liverpool Victoria) were very reasonable about adding me to his policy using my US license and the cost wasn't prohibitive. Hope this helps :)
