Volunteering
« on: June 29, 2015, 11:57:25 PM »
Hello! I noticed in some older threads that volunteering was seen as work, though unpaid. Since I didn't see anything more recent to add this question to, I was wondering if volunteering whilst on a General visa would be a problem?

And in case it isn't, could anyone share some of the major volunteering match up sites used in the UK?

Many thanks!

Volunteering is seen as unpaid work, so if you are in the UK with a visa that does not allow employment (such as a visitor visa) then you are not permitted to volunteer.

ETA:  I noticed that you were inquiring about a Tier 2 general visa in previous posts.  If you were in the UK with this visa, then you would be permitted to volunteer, as this visa would allow employment in the UK.  (see link below for the dos and don'ts of this visa)

Thank you Aquila! Though I now feel stupid that it was literally outlined in a page I've read several times. I guess I never had it in mind when perusing before!
