Best way to ship breakable items?
« on: July 01, 2015, 05:47:24 PM »
I have one medium-sized box full of breakable things, has anyone had any experience on the best way to ship breakables (USPS, UPS, etc.)?

Also, I really can't afford an exorbitant customs charge right now. If I declare them as personal items, which they are, will I avoid the customs charge?

I read on one of the UK gov pages that household items are permitted free of customs charges and VAT up to 12 months after you move as long as they were yours here and in use by you for at least 12 months.
I would recommend UPS and some stores will pack them for you.
Shredded newspaper combined with an extra box wall and bubble wrap is how I ship fragile things in my business. It works most of the time :)
Met in 1999 online
Married in 2002 on US Visa
Applied for UK Visa May 2015
Waiting dramatically for a response.
Plan to move to the UK Early Autumn 2015

We ended up packing all of our breakables and had them insured with the rest of the lot...took pictures of everything, lots of bubble wrap and double packed/foam noodle boxes to make sure they were safe. I was discreet with marking them.
