Finally got a great haircut!
« on: January 30, 2016, 08:17:28 PM »
I know, this is small potatoes for some people, but for me... a HUGE sigh of relief. I found a stylist today, it only took 2 years!

I walked out looking like a different person! I had enough hair cut off to give someone else a longer style then I currently have. haha.

Oh, Ben Brown hair in Derby has made me the happiest person today! It's amazing. I can't stop smiling or taking selfies!  ;D
The usual. American girl meets British guy. They fall into like, then into love. Then there was the big decision. The American traveled across the pond to join the Brit. And life was never the same again.

That is fab! I know your pain, and the relief in finding someone who can cut your hair the way you like it!

Does anyone have any suggestions for Weybridge, Surrey? We've been here for 3 years and I still don't feel like I've had a great haircut.

Oh, it is not an easy thing to find a new stylist. I've been looking for so long. My last haircut before this one was when I was back in the States in June 2015. haha.

This is the before and after, crazy right? https://scontent-lhr3-1.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-xfp1/v/t1.0-9/12662034_926279847450329_3867496064162203790_n.jpg?oh=ab8b9deaae90a44a7e6fb07517a348b2&oe=572BDD5A

I'd share if I had any suggestions! I wish you the best of luck. :)

Congratulations - that is a huge thing!   :D

Our hair is such a big part of our image and it's awful when you can't get a good cut.  I've been hacking away at mine since last summer too - self cuts are not ideal!

By the way, your new hair style is adorable.
Here 2 years as of Oct. 1, 2016.

Love it Lyonaria!

I stumbled upon mine by luck.  A friend I made who is a mobile hairdresser.  I miss the salon experience but am happy to trade that for a stylist I trust.   :)

Wow! I love those before and after photos! So pretty! I haven't had a hairdresser that I have really loved in YEARS!! So, to find one after two seems long but at least you found a fantastic match!

Bit of a shock in the price from where we were near Spokane ($25 with tip) and my wife paid £32 last week.....which is cheap for here. It can easily go a lot higher than that around here. But she went through a couple to find this one.  Luckily....being a guy who doesn't care about his hair......my wife just takes the electric clippers out every once in a while, throws on the #2 attachment and WHAM......I'm done.

haha  :) I wish my husband would let me do that but he apparently doesn't trust me enough for such a procedure.  ;)

He found a lovely hairdresser here at Supercuts, she's really good.  He's paying 20quid now for a much better cut than he used to get in Los Angeles for goodness knows how much in a fancy salon! (she comes without the attitude too, bonus!)

Thanks everyone! I've been wanting to get it cut shorter basically since my last cut here in the UK, but the last UK stylist cut my hair unevenly and it was 42GBP for a not great cut.

So this time, I paid 50GPB for a restyle with a fun to chat to gent who did a great job on my hair.

My husband thinks it's a bit much to spend, but he understands how important my hair is to me. :)

I've never taken scissors to my own hair, you're much braver than I am, Becca.

I'm glad you found a great stylist KFdancer!

I dont know what it is about Europe, but this has been a real trial for me.  Two years ago I got probably the worst cut of my life in Sweden that took almost a year to grow out.  I had a trim in June of that year with some random stylist here that was just a pretty blah cut. By December I thought to try an Aveda salon and this Italian guy at the one in Blackheath did a crazy good job on my hair - it was exceptional!  I never realized the power of a good hair cut for feeling confident - and I certainly was on my next job interview three days later!

Since then weve moved and Blackheath is impossible to get to for the times when he cuts hair. I tried the Aveda in Hampstead three times and had a range of not good to downright terrible experiences.  I really hate "hair barns" as I call them - ranks of stylist chairs and no feeling of personal service.  Last time they forgot about me for 45 minutes and almost charged me a no show even though I had contact with three different people at some point in those 45 mins.  Hated the snooty front staff, and ultimately really hated my haircut anyway, to the point where I was crying about that one random night (amongst other issues) to the boy.

Ive got straight, earlobe length hair - all i need is a decent layer job and a graduated bob.  There is NOTHING else possible to do with my hair short of a perm (yeah right!), why is this so hard to get right?

I found a potential replacement near work that is also an Italian guy, and with a Wahanda coupon at least to try him, I may give this a go in the next month or so.  Hair is starting to get on my nerves again! :)

When I was still single and working as a civilian school teacher on US military bases I used to go to the on base hair cutters (it was cheap.....like $5 or so). 5 years on a marine base/Okinawa. I got tired of going in and just asking them to cut my hair shorter. The instructions were simple. Cut the hair shorter (I would hold my hands with fingers apart at the length I wanted it.....I wanted the same length ALL OVER. But.....I was on a marine base....I always got longer on the top and tight on the sides. They didn't know how to cut hair any other way. A marine comes in and gets it tight on the sides so tough luck. I finally started trying to cut it myself with electric clippers.....I had more than one teacher the next day who would then take me to the side and fix my bad attempts (I couldn't see the back). Don't get a haircut on a marine base unless you want it tight on the sides...... :D :D

I understand your pain. I had an amazing stylist back in the US, I miss her like mad. Such a lovely person and always did an amazing job. Cut moving to the UK. My first haircut in the UK after being here for 2 months was atrocious.  It was 2 months before my wedding (so glad I thought to do it early). I cried for 2 days. I did get it evened out in time for the wedding and it wasn't bad, but it wasn't great. I only got one or two other haircuts here after that, until this Saturday.

Have you tried looking for a stylist that posts photos of the haircuts they do on Facebook or Instagram? That's how I found Ben Brown.

Ok this is SO up my alley. For those of you that haven't met me I have super thick, coarse and wavy hair.  If not cut correctly, I can easily be mistaken for a member of the Sasquatch gene pool.  I've had a stylist for years that knew where to thin my hair out and where to cut my hair at the right curve of the curl so that I didn't have a shape that resembled a block of cheese or Sponge Bob Square Pants.  I hate to admit, this is probably one of my biggest worries of my entire move.  I am almost due for a cut.  Thank god my stylist gave me my hair color formula but I asked her if she were moving to a new country, how would she go about finding a new stylist (proving more what a deal this is to me) and she said that she would do one of two things:

1.  Scope people out on the street, if you see an amazing hair cut, ask them where they got it cut.  Unfortunately, this option is coming up blank for me, I think most people are stuck with "Minstrels Snips" (LOL!) around my parts so sadly, no luck.
2.  Check with a Vidal Sassoon trained salon.  Apparently they work with the unique and natural flow of an individual's head of hair.  I've located a place called The Style Guru in Reading.  So short of going to London, that's my only option.

I know this sounds snobby or high maintenance or whathaveyou, but I refer you to the above...I am apparently part Sasquatch.  My hair grows out and not down and takes on the shape of inanimate objects. It's kind of a big deal.

So I will try Style Guru, with reservation.  I will try anything as long as I can get a decent cut that allows me to keep my humanity! Haha.

If anyone finds a stylist of noteworthiness, I am following.

I've had good results with Vidal Sassoon in the past. They were able to tell me what was wrong with the haircut I'd had right before then, which I had hated.

Nowadays I just have very very long hair so there isn't much to do with it really. It's extremely thick but the stands themselves are quite fine so it's generally manageable without a whole lot of fuss. Though I am still in need of a good colour. I was very happy with a box dye in the US but unfortunately the same shade doesn't exist here so it's a bit darker than I'd like.
