Honeycomb Tripe for Mexican Menudo
« on: March 31, 2016, 09:19:43 AM »
So, I love this spicy Mexican soup called Menudo. It is made from hominy (which I can order from Mexgrocer.co.uk) and honeycomb tripe. While some butchers do periodically get flat tripe delivered, finding the honeycomb stuff is very difficult.

I have a feeling this won't be UK Yankee's most popular thread but does anyone know of a butcher that does honeycomb tripe?

Where are you located? I'm not 100% sure, but I'm like 80% certain I've seen it at Hillman's in Kilburn (NW London). If you'd like, I could take a walk tomorrow and swing by there, just to have a peek.

That's very kind of you hms_seahorse. I'm in Hampshire, right along the southcoast.

That'd be quite a long journey for you, then. A tripe trip.

D'you want me to pop in anyhow? If anyone asks, I'll just say I'm offally fond of gazing at meat.

LOL...

Actually, I found a butcher in Scotland that will ship it. If you still want to pop in and check, that would be great, as the more places I know about that sell it, the better. I am not afraid of driving to London if they have what I need and at a decent price.

Thanks again.

Sign me up for some Menudo!  Last time I went to a California Mexican restaurant my main meal was Menudo.  Yum

The Czechs make a great spicy tripe soup called drstkova polevka that I highly recommend

The Tripe Marketing Board is actually a joke thing -- not a real organisation!

Thanks for that -- I'm going to Prague next week, so I now know my mission.

Perhaps I should have put some sort of jokey smiley face? (I actually thought it was April Fool's day today so the joke is on me!)

I thought it was spam.

I wanted to tell you some other stuff to look out for in Prague but didn't want to hijack this thread so I made another thread about what to see and eat in Prague.

Sadly, Hillman's had only flat tripe in today. Or 'Tripe (Scottish)', as it was labelled. Just as things started to get a bit awkward in there, I bought half a kilo of bangers and ran for it.

I grew up on menudo and "tacos de tripa" (deep-fried tripe tacos with guacamole and red chile sauce). There's a place a few miles from me here in my Houston suburb and my English Hubster and my kids simply refuse to go with me to this taco joint because of their fear of tripe. Now I know I could go to Prague or Hillman's in Hampshire when we move back I feel a road trip coming on! Lol
