Should be straightforward-Figuring out what to file
« on: April 25, 2016, 04:47:11 PM »
Hello everyone, as June 15 approaches I want to make sure I have everything correct before I get started filing, which will be my first time.

First off, I had ZERO earnings last year.  I moved to the UK in June 2015, got married to a Brit in August 2015.  I started working in the UK in January 2016, I presume I will not need to report this until next year's filing?

Forms needed:
1040
2555
8965
Schedule B.  I had almost exactly $10,000 in my UK account for one day last year so I will fill out an FBAR as well.

Is this all correct?  Once again I didn't have any earnings last year, and I've never filed taxes before (never earned enough), but I want to get on the record now that I'm living in the UK.

Thanks!

Sidenote-What should I use to file? TurboTax? Something else?

If you had no earnings in 2015, then no 2555 - that's the foreign earned income exclusion. You have nothing to exclude for 2015.

I presume you may may have some interest to report on Schedule B? And yes, if you hit the magic $10K aggregate value for bank accounts...file the FBAR. That is done online; no other option, and it's simple.

I wouldn't bother with TurboTax - if no income, it's mostly $0 entries. Look at the IRS free file options, including 'free fillable forms'.
