That is hilarious, and makes me think back to when I was about 7 and Jim and Tammy Bakker from the PTL club had a bus going around the neighbourhood picking up kids.  They almost kidnapped me.

Nightmare.
I just hope that more people will ignore the fatalism of the argument that we are beyond repair. We are not beyond repair. We are never beyond repair. - AOC

I replied to this the other day but it didn't work for some reason :( basically was saying I had met these people one on one before. The problem in the scenarios was that I asked too last minute, but I can see your thought process and might be the problem with some people for sure!

I can imagine in the OP's situation that you read that she would probably be put off from asking again in future as I can see that as quite a tough rejection. I think more so because she was convinced to step outside of her comfort zone and ask the girlfriend to hang out. The girlfriend totally assumed this would become a regular thing (you know what they say about assumptions!). Obviously she doesn't have to say yes by any means but maybe the roommate who convince the OP should've probably checked with the girlfriend first beforehand as I think, at least if I were that OP, I wouldn't put myself out there again - at least not easily.

I agree. I think what I was trying to get at it is your point about how it would be nice to be able to just grab a cup of coffee. For us this is a very casual thing, but it seems to be more of an ordeal in the UK, although I'm not exactly sure why. But it's as if you're almost putting them in an inconvenient spot by asking.

And again the opposite, I'm waiting for someone to stop by with a printer they're letting me borrow. Said they would be around "after tea" and still not here! :-/ I want to get in my pajamas already haha

I would be PJ'd up so quick regardless, you have no idea!! Hahah

Oh yeah, totally agree with that! I just want coffee with a 20-30 minute sit down, not a long term committed relationship! Hahah

It's the same reason why London commuters NEVER acknowledge even the basic existence of their  fellow commuters, even after years of travelling together.  What if they want to chat every morning?

haha I always just assume they don't acknowledge each other (although I've exchanged acknowledging nods with those I would commute with on a regular basis - people seem to stick to a particular car each morning haha) for the same reason I avoid it - I am NOT a morning person! I either find I'm crabby from having to wake up and prefer not to talk and just read or I'm sooo overly tired I could probably just chat crap for the whole ride straight. There is no in betweeen! lol
