freelance and NI numb

On a whim, I applied for a job doing some very sporadic, freelance work with an online company. I'm here on a Tier 2 dependent visa and so have ability to work, but I have no idea what to do about the National Insurance number. I'm guessing I just have to apply for it on my own? I'll be making pocket money mostly (think £50 a month), do I even need a NI number?

Everybody has to apply for it themselves if they have come to the UK on a visa (while UK citizens are issued one automatically when they turn 16), though it may be that someone on a main Tier 2 visa has someone in their company's HR who sorts out their NI application.

You will need a National Insurance number if you will be working in any capacity in the UK, as it is used to calculate your tax and National Insurance contributions.
